Born: Jun 22, 1918
Date of Passing: Dec 02, 2001
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANTONIOS MITOUSIS Antonios passed away at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg on Sunday, December 2, 2001. He was 83 years old. Antonios will be missed by the many people who loved him, especially his adored wife Marika, who never left his side through his long illness, and his dear son Emmanouel and his wife Dorothea. His two grandchildren, Maria and Tony, will miss their sweet Papouli, but will remember him always with great respect and admiration. Antonios is predeceased by his two brothers, Nikos and Themsitokles; and sister Kleopatra, all of Iasmos, Greece. He will be remembered fondly by his many nieces and nephews in both Canada and Greece, especially Tasoula and family of Iasmos, Kyriakos and family of Iasmos, and Emmanouel and family of Germany. Antonios was born in Iasmos on June 22, 1918, and as a young man he fought in the Second World War. He then married his beloved Marika Gamvrelis in Kavala in April 1947. In 1966, Antonios immigrated with his family to Canada and settled in Winnipeg. For many years he worked at City Meats, Winnipeg. In their later years, he and Marika often travelled back to spend summers in Greece, never losing touch with the friends, family and the special love and pride they carried for their homeland, which they passed on to their grandchildren. Antonios was a gentle man and friend to all who had the pleasure and privilege of knowing him. He is remembered by his family and friends as a man who was always smiling and who found great pleasures in the simplest of pastimes such as working in his garden, sitting in the sunshine of his auli, and reading his many books. His last year was a difficult one, but his unbreakable spirit and sense of humour is inspiration to us all. We will miss him terribly but are comforted in the knowledge that he has come home. "Now when he reached the foot of the hill, he turned again towards the sea, and he saw his ship approaching the harbour, and upon her prow the mariners, the men of his own land. And his soul cried out to them, and he said: Sons of my ancient mother, you riders of the tides, how often have you sailed in my dreams. And now you come in my awakening, which is my deeper dream. Ready am I to go, and my eagerness with sails full set awaits the wind. Only another breath will I breathe in this still air, only another loving look cast backward, and then I shall stand among you, a seafarer among seafarers." Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Grace Hospital, and especially to our family doctor Brian Rumbolt for his care over the years. Honourary pallbearers are Anthony Mitousis, Archy Gamvrelis, Kyriakos Hatzipanayis, George Gamvrelis, Dean Gamvrelis and Demetrios Horinos.
