ALFIE JUDITH LEKNES (nee ANDERSON) Alfie passed away peacefully in her sleep at Lions Personal Care Centre on December 4, 2001 at the age of 85 years. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Joan (Dick) Closson, Norma (Tom) Wilson; son Lloyd (Gail) Leknes; grandchildren, Brian (Gail) Closson, Glenn Closson, Lyle Closson, David (Yvette) Wilson, Jennifer (Omar) Khan; great-grandchildren, Rhys, Frazer and Kalysha Closson; sister Juliet Louttit; sister-in-law Joyce Anderson; son-in-law Paul Janzen and several nieces and nephews. Alfie was predeceased by her husband Alert in 1957, an infant son Norman in 1943, daughter Elsie Janzen in 1993 and seven sisters and brothers. Alfie was born June 1, 1916 to pioneer parents at Atwater, SK. She married Alert Leknes in 1938 and they farmed together until his death. In 1961 she moved her family to Winnipeg where the following year she began studying to become a nurse. After graduating as an L.P.N. she nursed at the Misericordia Hospital until her retirement. Her later years were spent at Lions Manor and most recently at Lions Personal Care Centre. Our mother was a sweet and gracious lady with a quiet sense of wit and humour which she kept to the very end. She never wanted to be a burden to anyone. Her life was not always an easy one but she always rose to the challenge. She spent many hours reading, doing crosswords and puzzles and knitting many of her cherished afghans as well as countless mitts, touques and scarves for charity. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Lions Personal Care Centre, 3rd Floor, for their exceptional care of our mother during her last days as well as their kindness to our family. In accordance with Alfies wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Friday, December 7, at 2:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor St. Interment will be in Atwater, SK, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Lions P.C.C., 320 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 2W6 or First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor St., Winnipeg.
