BARBARA ANN CANTLIE (nee SHERMAN) Suddenly on Monday, December 3, 2001 at Toronto in her 77th year. Predeceased by her beloved husband Ronald Barclay Cantlie, Q.C. Much loved mother to Colin and his wife Liz and Susan and her husband Jeff MacIntosh. Proud grandmother of Katie, Robyn and William. Survived by her brother L.R. "Bud" Sherman and his wife Lizanne of Winnipeg, sister Joan Weir and her husband Dr. Ormond Weir of Kamloops, BC, and sister-in-law Jean Stewart of Banffshire, Scotland. Will be fondly missed by her niece and nephews: Hugh Stewart and his wife Gilly, Ian Weir and his wife Jude, Paul Weir and his fiancee Sandra, Michael Weir and his wife Jacqueline, Richard Weir and his wife Coleen, Cathy Sherman and her partner Gord Fry, Dr. Christopher Sherman, and Todd Sherman. Barbara was the daughter of the late Most Reverend Louis Ralph Sherman, Archbishop of Ruperts Land, and his wife Carolyn Gillmor Sherman. Barbara was predeceased by her adored brother Laurence who was killed in action during the Second World War. Barbara attended St. Hildas School for Girls in Calgary, Alberta and Rupertsland School for Girls in Winnipeg. Graduating from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1946, Barbara went to work in the personnel department at Burns and Company in Calgary, and at Socony Vacuum Company Ltd. in Calgary. Subsequently she worked for a number of years in the personnel department of the T. Eaton Company in Winnipeg. Following marriage to her husband Ron in Winnipeg in 1955, she raised their young family and then returned to the University of Manitoba to obtain her teaching certificate. Barbara then embarked on a much-loved career of teaching English, teaching first at Kildonan East Regional Secondary School, and then for many years at Balmoral Hall School for Girls in Winnipeg where she was head of the English Department for the Upper School. While teaching she obtained a Bachelor of Education degree and pursued studies at the post-graduate level. In 1986 Barbara retired from full-time teaching and she and Ron moved from Winnipeg to Calgary, where she was an enthusiastic volunteer in diverse areas: seniors programs, teaching skills to the hearing impaired, tour guide at the Glenbow Museum, and working with the Christ Church altar guild. Barbara was also an occasional teacher at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School in Okotoks, Alberta. In Calgary, Barbara and Ron were active members of the Glencoe Club and the Reform Party and were participants in many community activities. They were lifelong members of the Anglican Church. In Winnipeg, one of their strongest associations was with Rons militia regiment, the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and they were enthusiastic promoters of Scottish country dancing. Barbara resided in Calgary until her husbands death in 1998. Recently, Barbara had been living with Susan and Jeff and their family in Toronto and she treasured the years she spent with her grandchildren. She was loved and will be missed terribly by her family and her many close friends. Friends may call at the TRULL FUNERAL HOME "NORTH TORONTO CHAPEL", 2704 Yonge St. (5 blocks south of Lawrence) on Sunday, December 9 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be be held at ST. CLEMENTS EGLINTON ANGLICAN CHURCH (Duplex Avenue and Briar Hill) Monday afternoon at 2:00 oclock. Cremation to follow. A reception will be held in the Reception Room of the church. An additional memorial service will be held in the spring at Christ Church in Calgary, with date and time to be announced.
