ARNOLD JOHN MICKELSON Arnold passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2001. Arnold was predeceased by his parents John and Bertha Mickelson and by his wife Rosemary. He is survived by his brother Glenn of Kirkland Lake, ON; niece Laurie of New Liskard ON,; nephew Randy of Ottawa, ON; cousin Ralph Backstrom of Colorado; cousin Roy Backstrom of Kirkland Lake, ON and cousin Gunnel of Burlington, ON. Arnold was born March 16, 1931 in Kirkland Lake. He graduated from Michigan State University in geology. He worked for several years as an exploration geologist with Hudson Bay Exploration and Development in Flin Flon Manitoba. He prospected on his own for several years and after his marriage he worked for the CPR laboratory in Winnipeg. He retired from the CPR after 25 years. Arnold had many interests in life. He joined the Toastmasters in 1969 and belonged to a number of clubs over the years, some of which he helped to start. He held many positions at Toastmasters over the years. He loved speech contests. He was a mentor to many and was well loved and respected. Arnold had a passion for the theatre. He was a playwright and belonged to the Manitoba Association of Playwrights. He loved to attend the Fringe every year and he put on one of his plays there one year. Arnold belonged to the Meditation group. He enjoyed his many trips to their events around the country especially to New York. Arnold was a long time member of the Manitoba Prospectors and Developers Association. He held positions of President and Director at various times in his association with the MPDA. He took over and maintained the Winnipeg Mineral Exploration Discussion Group. This group put on talks once a month and Arnold was once again in his element as a Toastmaster. He enjoyed putting on Gold Panning shows at various venues. He loved nothing better than spending time prospecting his claims in Manitoba and Ontario, alone enjoying nature and listening to his beloved classical music at night. Cremation has taken place. A gathering is planned for the spring to commemorate Arnold. His ashes will be placed with his wife at that time. It is hoped that his brother will be well enough to attend.
