CARL H. (CHARLIE) SAWATZKY It is with deep sadness that the family of Carl Sawatzky announce his passing on December 13, 2001, at Concordia Hospital, at the age of 79 years. Carl is survived by Margaret, his loving and devoted wife of 59 years; his children, Ed (Theresa), Marlene (Pietro), Tom (Colleen), Laura (Al), Ron (Donna) and Leona (Tim) his grandchildren, Lisa (Brent), Chris, Mark (Crystal), Roberta, Ryan, Derek and Richard; his brothers, Henry and Dave Sawatzky of Altona and sisters, Helen Hildebrand of Altona, Anne Hildebrand of Alberta, Mary Giesbrecht, Sue Schroeder, Betty Hawrys and Marge Harten of BC. He was predeceased by his parents, Peter B. and Maria Sawatzky, a daughter Dora and sister Tina Enns. Carl was a loving family man, proud of all his children and grandchildren. He was a respected businessman for 55 years; in earlier years part of Sawatzky Bros. in Halbstadt and later as owner of Sawatzkys General Store in Emerson. He was always a valued community member, serving as Postmaster and Credit Union Manager in Halbstadt and on church and community committees in Emerson. Over the years, he was involved in the sporting activities of hockey, curling and golf. Following retirement in 1991, Carl particularly enjoyed the game of golf and worked hard to re-establish the Emerson Golf Course and clubhouse. In 1998 Carl and Margaret moved to Altona to be closer to family. Sadly, in addition to wa lengthy battle with cancer, Carl suffered from the pain of shingles for the past 3 years. His pain has finally ended - may he rest in peace. The family ishes to extend a special thank you to the caring nursing staff at N2W Concordia Hospital. The funeral service for Carl will be held on Monday, December 17 at 2:00 p.m. in the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church, Altona, MB. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, contributions in his memory can be made to Cancercare Manitoba or The Kidney Foundation of Canada (Manitoba Branch). Arrangements entrusted to Wiebes Funeral Chapel, Altona, MB.
