BOB OPITZ March 27, 1923 - December 14, 2001 With great sadness we announce that Bob Opitz slipped quietly away at age 78 having enjoyed a wonderful life. The most important thing in Bobs life was his family - especially his wife and best friend of 57 years (his Dol), his children, grand-children and great-grandchildren. Bob immersed himself wholeheartedly in each and all of their lives, always the mentor, teaching and cheering them on to be and do all that they could. Bobs motto - "you can if you think you can". Bob was a firm believer in the power of positive thinking, a peaceful a man with a zest for life, quick wit and time for everyone. He loved to laugh and make others laugh too. A larger than life role model, Bobs family will miss him dearly. Bob served in the navy during the Second World War. Following the war, he completed 38 years of employment at Winnipeg Hydro. Bob contributed to his community on the North YM/YWCA Board of Directors and the Civic Credit Union Board. Bob will be missed most by his Dol; his daughters, Judy, Joan (Rob) and Jackie (Derrick) and his son Bob (Kym) his grand-children, Saundra (Murray), Roberta (Ryan), Adrienne, Michael, Monica, Avery, Kriston, Kelly, Erin and Hailey; and his great-grandchildren, Ryden, Reghan and Brody. Predeceased by twin daughters, father Valentino Legler and parents Theresa and Andrew Opitz; cousin Martin; brother Paul; sister Madge and brother-in-law Charlie; Bob is survived by brothers, Andy (Lee) and Marty (Sylvia) sister Margaret (Don) and sister-in-law Barbara (Gerry) brother-in-law Lawrence and many nieces and nephews. To the end, Bob and his Dol took great pleasure in many fun excursions with Bobs family and sister-in-law Gladys, brother-in-law Lorne (Freda) and nephew Ron (Margaret). The family expresses heartfelt thanks to Doctors Isaac, Woo, Alvi and Milner and the staff at Concordia Hospital - special mention to Ann, who worked so hard to ensure Bobs dignity and comfort. Family and friends will gather together to celebrate Bobs life on Tuesday, December 18 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., Chaplain Paul Martin officiating. Interment will take place on Thursday, December 20 at Brookside Cemetery, 3001 Notre Dame at 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a charity of choice. And finally, to all those Bob knew and loved, "so long, its been good to know you!" CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My condolences to the Opitz family. We lived two houses away from the Opitz family. My sister was friends with Judy, same age. What I liked about Mr. Opitz was his outgoing personality. I believe he served in the navy during WWII. During the winter when I saw him across the yards, he would throw me a roll of black electrical tape for me to tape my hockey stick. He also helped my grandfather with his wooden duck decoys. As the telephone poles were of cedar, he would have a retired telephone pole or two dropped off at our yard. My grandfather would cut them into two foot section, outline the duck pattern and carve. This was his winter passion. I have fond memories of the Opitz family and sorry to see not only Bob pass away, but later his daughter Judy. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Colin Dederick (neighbour) on: Aug 28, 2020
