ETHEL MARY GRETZ Ethel Mary Gretz passed away at her home in the presence of her son on December 8, 2001. Predeceased by her husband Frank and her brothers, Ned McLean Barbour and John Barbour. Born at Fort a la Corne, SK on June 12, 1915 to John and Margaret Barbour. She married in 1942 at The Pas, MB, wearing the wedding ring passed down from Julie, daughter of Marie Lagimodiere. She was employed at MTS at The Pas prior to her marriage. During her marriage she worked for Carnation Foods in Carberry and at the Mental Health Centre in Brandon, MB. After moving to Victoria she worked with her husband at Saunders & Hitchman Motors and later in private work with her husband, prior to her retirement. She was an avid reader and gardener and took pride in her knitting and crochet work. She led an active and independent life in the last years of her life; baking bread and re-knitting the foot of a stocking on the morning of her death. Left to mourn her passing are her sons, Robert (Nora), James, Bruce (Jane), Frank (Doreen) grandchildren, Shane (Terri), Bart (Gwen), Don (Evelyn), Cindy (Darcy), Armys, Crystal, John and Skylar Chisholm, Justine Underhill, Diamond Reid; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Chloe, Tarryn, Dawn, Shawn, Justin and Cody Keehn, Brendan; nieces and nephews, Rick and David Sibbald, Shirley Read, Carol Gretz, Lorne Barbour, Stanley Barbour, Linda Barbour, Maxine Barbour, Philip Barbour, Osborn Turner; cousin Pearl Johnson; sister-in-law Freda Barbour; members of her husbands family Frank De Walt (Huntington Beach, CA) and Linda De Walt (Aberdeen, SD) longtime friends, Lillian Gilbert (Mesa, AZ), Dorothy Tulman (Sorrento, BC), and Marion Sutherland (Brandon, MB). Cremation has taken place. She will be interred with her husband at the Military Cemetery in Esquimalt at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2002. Following services for Ethel, graveside services will be said for her husband Frank and her brother Ned. Padre Edwin Taylor will preside. Special thanks to Lorne, Mimi, and David Barbour, Armys Gretz and Al Gilcrest for their visiting over the past three years. Special thanks also to Dr. Martin Lane (and his father before him) for caring and competent medical services and to the ambulance and paramedical persons who attended on the morning of Ethels death. Flowers are gratefully declined; a donation to a local womens shelter would be appreciated.
