SHANE MacKAY In Winnipeg on December 21, 2001, Shane MacKay, beloved husband of Isabelle Proctor. Predeceased in 1990 by his first wife, Shirley McDiarmid, he is survived by daughters, Sheila Brownscombe of Toronto and Leslie Chalke of Vancouver; son Douglas of Toronto, and grandchildren, Stewart and John Brownscombe, Simon, Alison, Bethan, and Douglas Chalke, and Joseph and Stephen MacKay. He is also survived by his sister Mary Roblin of Winnipeg; brother John, of Gananoque, ON, and step-children, Pamela and Philip Proctor and Barbara Pavlich. Born May 21, 1926 in Ottawa to Alice and Douglas MacKay, Shane was raised in Winnipeg. He attended Ravenscourt School and the University of Manitoba. He worked as a newspaper reporter for the Winnipeg Tribune, The Canadian Press, and the Winnipeg Free Press, and later as a correspondent for the Free Press in Ottawa and Washington. In 1951, he was the first Canadian to be awarded a Nieman Fellowship to Harvard University. He was managing editor of the Readers Digest Canadian edition in Montreal from 1954 to 1959, and executive editor of the Winnipeg Free Press from 1959 to 1967. In 1967, he joined the International Nickel Company of Canada Ltd. in Toronto, becoming a vice president. He retired in 1982. With Shirley and later Isabelle, he spent many happy years at Atlantis, FL and Minaki, ON. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 28 in the Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. The service will terminate at the chapel. Flowers are gratefully declined.
