Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJACOB SAWATZKY Peacefully after a short illness Jake passed away at the Concordia Hospital on Saturday, December 22, 2001, surrounded by his family. Jake was born to Jacob and Helen Sawatzky on December 26, 1929 in Altona, MB. He spent most of his childhood in Steinbach, where he developed his passion for music and airplanes. After high school he worked for the Hudsons Bay Company and taught school in Norway House. It was there he met his wife Margaret Currie. Jake and Margaret moved to East Kildonan to raise their family and resided there for about 50 years. He was a long-time employee of the Federal Government in the Water Resources Department and spent many years surveying the river and streams of Manitoba and North Western Ontario. In the 1960s and 1970s he coached minor hockey in Morse Place and was a member at Rossmere Golf Course where he was a strong supporter of the Junior Golf Program. Jake is survived by his wife of 50 years Margaret; his three sons, Doug (Helene Savard), Greg (Freida Butcher) and Brent (Shannon Neufeld) and his only daughter Heather. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Stephanie and Daniel of Winnipeg, Matt, Beth and Cam of Calgary, AB, and Benj of Winnipeg; his brother Tony (Doris) of Pinawa; his sisters, Annie Reimer (Almon), Margaret Friesen, Agatha Heibert (Phillip) and Pat Koop (Larry) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father in 1979 and his mother in 1980. A family graveside service will be held Saturday, December 29 at 11:00 a.m. in Steinbach. Followed by a memorial service at Grey Street United Church, in Winnipeg December 29 at 1:30 p.m. Flowers gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Western Canada Aviation Museum, Hangar T-2, 958 Ferry Rd., Winnipeg, MB, R3H 0Y8. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Concordia Hospital for their assistance and compassion. Services entrusted to Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St., 338-7111.
