KATHERINE (KAY) PALMER It is with great sadness that we announce the passing, in the early hours of December 27, 2001 with her loving family by her side, of Katherine Mary (Kay) Palmer, after a brave battle with cancer. Her great strength of will enabled her to achieve her goal of spending Christmas Day with her family, especially the grandsons whom she so dearly loved. She leaves to mourn her passing Victor (Vic) Palmer, her devoted husband of 50 years; her daughters, Sharon Buckley and Vicki Blackwood; her son-in-law Don Blackwood; her grandsons, David and John Blackwood; her sister Beverley (Duncan) Lamb, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Kay was predeceased by her parents Percival and Gladys MacKinnon and her sisters, Joyce McEwen and Elsie Lynch; brothers-in-law Larry McEwen and MacK Lynch. She was born on February 18, 1920. the eldest of four daughters, in MacGregor, MB, where she spent her childhood years. After graduating from high school and working briefly as a beekeeper, she took a secretarial course in Winnipeg and worked there and in her fathers law office in MacGregor, until she married Ken Buckley of Squamish, BC in 1942. He died in 1944 while serving as a Flight Lieutenant with the RCAF in England. Kay then worked again as a legal secretary for her fathers law office, and also took over his general insurance agency, until she married Vic Palmer in 1951. Thereafter Kay devoted her energies and talents to being a homemaker for her family. She was an excellent amateur artist and took courses towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Manitoba. She also studied at the Forum Art Institute and participated in their exhibitions for several years. Kay and Vic enjoyed foreign travel, winters spent at their condo in Fort Myers, FL, and quiet family holidays at their Nutimik Lake cottage. She served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Whiteshell District Association for two years. Kay was known for her wry sense of humour, her intelligence, her calm good sense, her gracious and kindly manner, her quiet strength of character, and the huge, warm hugs she delighted in giving her grandsons. She will be very deeply missed by her family and friends. The family wishes to thank Linda Bull and other medical staff at the Victoria Hospital. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Sunday December 30 at 4:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Kays memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9 or Winnipeg Harvest, 1085 Winnipeg Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0S2.
