GLADYS (GLADY) M. HEPBURN (nee CARPENTER) It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Gladys (Glady) Hepburn, who died peacefully in her sleep on December 19, 2001, at the age of 98, at her residence in Lions Manor, where she spent the last years of her life. Glady was predeceased by her parents, George and Emma Carpenter; brothers, Fred (and close friend and sister-in-law Doreen), Cyril (Edie), George (Dadie) sisters, Mable (Art) Coburn, Dorothy (Frank) Waver. She is survived by her special niece Joyce Shepherd of San Jose, California; sister-in-law M.J. (Freddies second wife) and her last remaining nieces and nephews and friends in Winnipeg and California. Glady was born in England on May 19, 1903 and immigrated to Canada with her parents at the age of three. The family moved to Winnipeg where Glady lived all her long and happy life. The family lived in the west end of the city where Glady grew up and went to school. The family spent many happy summers in Winnipeg Beach where they had a cottage. Glady spent her summers in Winnipeg Beach until a few years ago when old age and illness forced her to reluctantly give up this tradition that meant so much to her. As a young woman Glady married George (Slimmy) Hepburn. Slimmy and Glady never had children which is unfortunate, as with all the love and kindness Glady possessed, she would have made a wonderful mother. She did, however, share this kindness and love with the many people who were fortunate to know her in her time on earth. George was taken from Gladys early, in the mid 1950s. Glady grieved for George, but eventually went on with her life. She was always industrious, strong willed and self reliant. For many years she was employed at Raleighs where she worked until retirement. While she continued to live in Winnipeg, her summers were always spent in Winnipeg Beach, in the cottage that held so many happy memories. She always lived her life to the fullest, enriching so many lives with her wonderful sense of humour and caring. Nothing seemed to get Glady down, and even in her last years of old age and illness, she never complained and always sought to make others happy with her cheery outlook and gentle ways. She lived a long and happy life. Glady will be lovingly remembered by all who had the pleasure to know her. Many thanks to the staff at Lions Manor where the spent the last two years of her life. Cremation has already taken place. A celebration of Gladys life will take place in the Spring of 2002. God Bless, Glady.
