JAMES SHERRIDAN MULLAN III (JIM) James Sherridan Mullan was born in Winnipeg May 26, 1915, the fourth of eight surviving children of Catherine, (a Presbyterian Scot) and James II (an Irish Catholic). He died in Winnipeg December 28, 2001. He was predeceased by his parents; by all but one of his siblings; and by his beloved Phyllis, to whom he was married for 52 years. He is survived by his youngest brother, Raymond; by his daughters, Pat (Terry) Simonson and Anne (Bernie) Hunter; by his grandchildren, Jason (Allison) Cobb, Sarah Tonn (Michael Dymund) and Cindy Cobb; and by Cindys son Nicholas, his only great-grandchild. He is also survived by the love of his late life, Salme, his wife these last eight years, and by her daughters, Esther (Dan) Wilson with their sons Clayton and Kyle; and Krista Prost. He will be missed by friends and correspondents around the world. Dad had a brilliant and inquiring mind. He graduated from Grade 12 at St. Johns High School in Winnipeg having just turned 15, a skinny kid entering the job market at the depths of the Great Depression. He rode the rails, finding work where he could, and writing stories of his adventures and travelling companions for the Vancouver Sun. He retained his sense of wanderlust well into his old age. He was an officer in the Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry stationed in England during the Second World War. Here he met (and in 1941, married) Phyllis, bringing her back "as a souvenir of the war." He worked for the Federal Government, principally for the department now called Human Resources Canada, for 27 years, taking early retirement 1967. Dad was for many years a member of the Manitoba Horticultural Association and the Winnipeg African Violet Society. He was a founder and honorary life member of the Manitoba Society of Seniors. He was recently honoured as a longtime resident of Charleswood, his home for the last 54 years. Dad was generous to a fault. He loved life passionately. He gave it his all, and was independently making decisions until his last hour. He lived a long and full life... and he will be missed. There is now a very large "Dad-sized" hole in our lives... and that is how it should be. He was a bit of a hermit, a quiet man, a gentleman, and not comfortable with expressing his feelings, but he loved us deeply, and we knew it. We loved him too. May he rest in peace. The memorial service for Jim Mullan was held Monday, December 31 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Buckingham Road and Eldridge Avenue in Charleswood, Pastor Glenn Krentz officiated.
