SAMUEL EDWARD STEIMAN Sammy died suddenly on Thursday, January 10, 2002, in Palm Springs, CA at the age of 87. He died of a stroke. He was born in Winnipeg March 29, 1914, into a prominent Winnipeg Jewish family. He served in the Canadian Air Force during the Second World War in the rank of leading aircraftsman. After the war, he worked for several years in the family business, Carters Auction Rooms, and then branched out into the tourism industry, specializing in unique experiences for hunters and fishermen in remote areas of northern Saskatchewan, Alberta and North of 60. He never really retired. Even in his eighties, he continued to work on innovative tourism marketing concepts. He had a special interest in photography, which he did for the love of taking pictures, not for profit, and he worked closely for several years with his friend, the late Winnipeg Mayor Stephen Juba, to showcase Winnipeg in promotional brochures. A debonair gentleman with an abundance of charm, he brightened every room he entered. He had a great sense of humour, always with the right words to put a smile on the face of everyone he met. He could not pass a park bench with an older person without a kind word. Always with a twinkle in his eyes, he would not pass by a child without a wink or a joke. Generations of children knew him as The Magic Man, who would mysteriously pull coins from behind their ears or from their elbow. Sammy would do anything for anyone. Many people, especially his sisters, came to rely on him to do things they would ask no one else to do. He was to celebrate his 49th wedding anniversary on Friday, January 11. He is survived by his loving wife, Leona, and son Max Morton (Sharon) David Morton, son-in-law Ronnie Salute, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three sisters, a brother and many nieces and nephews. His daughter Sherry died two weeks before him. The funeral is to be held Sunday, January 13, in Palm Springs. Donations may be made to a childrens charity of your choice.
