ERNEST McCALLUM Peacefully on Sunday, January 13, 2002 Ernest passed away in his sleep. He was born on April 17, 1938 in Morden, MB. He attended Anderson School and Roland School and then worked in the Royal Bank in Winnipeg. He then went home to Roland and worked with his father, Noble, at Roland Motors. Ernest began his career in Municipal work in February of 1960 with the Town of Tuxedo. He then moved to Ethelbert, Gladstone and finally to Carberry on January 1, 1967, as the Municipal Administrator for the Town of Carberry and the Rural Municipality of North Cypress. In Carberry, he raised his family. Because of his interest in preserving the past, he became involved with the Carberry Museum and the Carberry Archives. Ernest was also interested in researching his own familys history and had begun asking questions at age 15. After a lifes work of research he began publishing books: the Whitfield Family in 1994: the Curtis and Swales Families in 1996; the McCallum Family in 1998; and the Martin Family in 2000. Ernest retired from Municipal work at the end of 1996 and lived out his dream of retiring to the West Coast. He moved to British Columbia and there became part owner of an antique business. He loved going to auctions and scouring the countryside for a good antique "find". Due to failing health, in December of 2000 he moved back to Manitoba. He was predeceased by his father Noble McCallum in March 1986 and his mother Evelyn (Scott) McCallum in November 1994. He is survived by his four children, Deidre (Mike) Plett and their children, Gillian, Nolan and Callum of Landmark; Ian McCallum of Carberry; Fiona (James) Plett of Mitchell and Clyde McCallum of Carberry. He is also survived by one sister, Marion (Victor) Molchanko of Calgary and their family. The family would like to thank the staff, volunteers and homecare workers at the House of Hesed, where Ernest spent the last few months of his life. They provided care and compassion unconditionally. Funeral service will be held from Doyles Funeral Chapel in Carman on Wednesday, January 16 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Mike Plett officiating. Interment will take place in the Fairview Cemetery, Roland, MB. Lunch will follow after the interment. Doyles Funeral Chapel of Carman in care of arrangements.
