SAM SHENKAROW The family of Sam Shenkarow sadly announces the death of their dear father, grandfather and great-grandfather on January 12, 2002 at age 85. Sam was predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley just five months ago. He will always be remembered with great love and affection by his children, Marvin and Phyllis, Barry and Rena, Judy and Marshall; his grandchildren, Lori and Jeff, Michelle and Laurence, Morris and Rana, Carrie and Ross, Mira and Matthew, Marni and Jason and Lea and Harley; and his pride and joy, his five great-grandchildren, Natasha, Tyler, Jessica, Gillian and Sydney. Sam is survived by his sister Tillie and predeceased by his brothers, Lou and Izzy and his sisters, Jennie and Rita. Sam graduated with a degree in pharmacy from the University of Manitoba in 1939. He practiced in this field until the outbreak of the Second World War, when he enlisted and became an army lieutenant. When he returned from the war, Sam entered the world of business where he flourished. Throughout his career Sam had a strong passion for education. As part of his dedication he became the first president of the Ramah School Board. The crowning achievement of Sams life was his beautiful 56 year marriage to his darling Shirley. His world revolved around his family and his friends. Sam was a special man, a caring compassionate person whose open warm smile reflected his kind heart. One of his greatest delights was his travels with Shirley, especially the winters in Hawaii and in later years, Palm Springs. Above all, he was never happier than when he was puttering about at their cottage in Winnipeg Beach. Sam was a man of many talents and hobbies. He was well known for his photography, his wonderful skills at making jewelry and most remembered for his "handmade by Sam Shenkarow" acrylic pieces, all of which he generously gave to those he loved. All of his gifts will be cherished forever. Funeral services were held on Monday, January 14, 2002 at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. Pallbearers were his grandsons, Morris Shenkarow, Jeff Brown, Laurence Gilman, Ross Ransby, Matthew Narvey, Jason Weiss and Harley Greenberg. Shiva is being observed at 1204-255 Wellington Cres. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Kevin Coates for his care and compassion. Should you wish to make a donation in Sams memory it may be made to the Shirley and Sam Shenkarow fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, C400-123 Doncaster St., R3N 2B2, or to the charity of your choice.
