WINNIFRED (WINNIE) FLORENCE BIRD Peacefully, after a lengthy struggle, Winnie passed away January 17, 2002 with her family at her side. She was 88 years old. Winnie is survived by her brothers, George (Ethel) and James. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Winnie was predeceased by her parents, George Henry and Jeanette Florence; sisters, Constance Bernhard and Jean Duncan; brothers-in-law, Godfrey Bernhard and Edward Duncan; and sister-in-law Dorothy Bird. Winnie took great pride in her family and was always ready to help anyone in need. She had a special place in the hearts of her nieces and nephews. Winnie worked for Watkins until her retirement. She took great pride in being a member of the Eastern Star. Winnie overcame many illnesses and was determined to live independently and to remain in her own home, which was achieved with the help of home care in the last few years. The family would like to thank Home Care workers and the nurses on the Orthopaedics Ward at the St. Boniface Hospital for their care and compassion during her final days. In keeping with Winnies wishes, cremation has taken place. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery at a later date where she joins her beloved parents. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 23, at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB., R3B 2H8 or the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2B7.
