MARLENE PENNER (BARKMAN) After a courageous battle with cancer, God ended all suffering for Marlene, wife, mother and grandmother. Her suffering ended on January 19, 2002, with her loved ones beside her. Marlene was born in Steinbach, on February 20, 1935 to John K. and Sarah (Kroeker) Barkman. Mom felt a strong responsibility to her family and community. She raised three sons while supporting Milton through the early growth of Penner International. Her five grandchildren had a special place in her heart. Mom humbly spent countless hours devoting her time to the EMB Church, The MCC Thrift Shop, the Steinbach Public Library, and the Mennonite Village Museum. Mom always enjoyed discovering a new recipe, a new book, a challenging crossword or patching a perfect quilt and she loved quiet moments at the family cabin. She will be missed forever by her husband, Milton; three sons and their families, Doug and Paulette (Hilary and Hayley), Allan and Simone (Kyle, Chad and Darcy), Keith and Donna; two brothers, Ken (Karen) from Winnipeg, MB, and Richard (June) from Perth, Australia; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elma (Rollin) Reimer, Martha (Edmar) Rempel, Adina Penner, Gil (Heather) Penner, Joanne (John) Barkman; aunts and uncles; nieces and nephews; and loving friends. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 21, at the Cornerstone Bible Church, Reimer Ave. and 1st St., Steinbach, MB, from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, January 22, at the Steinbach Mennonite Church, 345 Loewen Blvd., Steinbach, MB, at 11:00 a.m. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to Dr. Curtis Krahn, the staff at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, and the St. Boniface CancerCare Unit. Also thank you for all the kind acts of love we received from family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bethesda Foundation, Box 739, Steinbach, MB, R0A 2A0. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Loewen Funeral Chapel, (204) 326-1351.
