MAURICE KENNETH ZACHARKIW It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Maurice, who passed away peacefully on Friday, January 25, 2002 at the Health Sciences Centre, at the age of 61 years. Maurice was predeceased by his mother Mary; father-in-law Paul Smigelski and brother Russell. Left to mourn his loss are his wife of 40 years, Shirley; son Kevin (Kendra) daughter Estelle (Gerald Tycholis) grandchildren, Kayla, Kyle and Hunter; and family pet Casey. Also left to mourn are his father Mike; mother-in-law Stella Smigelski; brothers, Robert (Judy), Larry, Allan (Coreen) sister Barbara (Ron) Michaluk; sisters-in-law, Helen Zacharkiw and Mabel (Larry) Summers; and numerous nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and many dear friends. Maurice was born in Gimli, MB on May 25, 1940. He lived and attended school in Frazerwood until his family moved to Winnipeg Beach in 1956. Soon after he moved to Winnipeg and began his plumbing career. He worked for numerous plumbing companies in different parts of the province until 1972 when he became the building manager of the Federal Fisheries Building at the University of Manitoba until his retirement in June of 1995. He was so very proud that he was asked to take this position knowing that he had only a grade 10 education. There wasnt a problem he couldnt solve. Maurice and Shirley moved to St. Andrews in 1964 where they resided and raised their two children. He was instrumental in the creation and building of the St. Andrews Community Club and earned a life-time membership. He was also a member of the Seven Oaks Game and Fish, a brother of the Knights of Columbus and an active parishioner and usher of the Notre Dame Catholic Church in Selkirk, MB. Some of his interest included, cooking, gardening, wood working, wine making, fishing at Cygnet Lake, deer hunting at Melita and being his childrens constant handyman. Maurice was kind and generous whose greatest joys in life were to be with his children and grandchildren, family and friends. He loss has created a great void in the lives of all who knew and loved him. The family would like to express their gratitude to family, friends and neighbours for their kind thoughts and prayers. Special thanks to Dr. B. Bedi and the nurses of the SICU on GH-7 at the Health Sciences Centre. Also a special thanks to Dr. Green who was so caring and compassionate in our sorrow. Flowers gratefully declined, donations in Maurices memory can be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 109-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9.
