Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFERNA JOY WIEBE HECTOR January 30, 1951-January 28, 2002 It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Ferna on Monday, January 28, while in British Columbia helping her parents. Throughout her life, Ferna put helping the people she loved before anything. Ferna is survived by her husband Ted Hector, her son Yanik, and daughter-in-law Melanie Sourisseau, her parents, John and Anne Wiebe; her sisters, Marilyn Schick (Wayne), Georgette Pare and Marjorie Wiebe (Hamish McIntosh) several beloved nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and cousins; as well as many dear friends. She was predeceased by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and Fern Hector. Ferna was born on January 30, 1951 in Carberry, MB. She earned a Bachelors degree in Family Studies and Home Economics at the University of Manitoba. In 1991 Ferna obtained a Masters degree in Human Ecology from the University of Manitoba. The pursuit of learning was very important to Ferna. She had an amazing ability with children from a very early age and devoted her life to working in this field. She began her career at the Manitoba Developmental Centre in Portage la Prairie. Ferna returned to Winnipeg where she managed a core-area daycare and later a group home. She went on to work for Child and Family Services and spent the last several years at the Manitoba Adolescent Treatment Centre (MATC) as a Mental Health Clinician. Ferna was everyones best friend. She was a funny person with a wonderful sense of humour and had an inexhaustible amount of love to give. Ferna cherished her childhood spent in the country surrounded by her many loving aunts and uncles. She spoke often and fondly of her these wonderful years which she held so close to her heart. It goes without saying that this helped to form the basis for her talent for working with children, particularly in Play Therapy. With her friend and colleague Julie Sodomsky, Ferna pioneered the Social Club at MATC, through which they afforded special needs children the opportunity to interact with other children in a social setting. She looked forward with eager anticipation to the weekly excursions, as she saw this as a way of allowing these children to be children. Above all, Ferna was a loving wife and best friend to Ted and a devoted mother and mentor to her son, Yanik, whom she adored. She will be sorely missed. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Maranatha Evangelical Free Church, 910 Sturgeon Rd., with Pastor Dave Lewycky officiating. A viewing will begin prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. There will be a reception at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Adolescent Social Clubs, in care of Manitoba Adolescent Treatment Centre, 120 Tecumseh Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 2A9.
