DAVID I. (ITZI) VICTOR Q.C. Beloved husband of Iola (Roseman), passed away unexpectedly on January 29, 2002 at the Saint Boniface Hospital. Born in Winnipeg in 1924, he attended the I.L. Peretz Jewish day school and then Machray School and St Johns Technical High School. In 1945 he earned his B.A. degree from United College (now University of Winnipeg) and in 1949 he obtained his LL.B. from University of Manitoba Law School. He practiced private law until 1970 when he joined the Manitoba Attorney Generals Department, serving first as Legal Counsel to the Ombudsman and then as Legal Counsel to the Agricultural Credit Corporation, until his retirement in 1992. He also served on the Administrative and Constitutional Law committees of the Manitoba Bar Association. Itzis extensive community activity began with the Winnipeg Jewish Youth Council in 1940. He served as president of the I.L. Peretz Folk School, as Western Region Vice-President of Canadian Jewish Congress and as Chairman of the Winnipeg Congress Council. He chaired the Western Region Committee for Yiddish for 16 years, was active in the Council of Christians and Jews in earlier years and was a member of the Glendale Club. He was a founding member of the Winnipeg Board of Jewish Education and also served as a board member of the Jewish Historical Society of Western Canada (now the Jewish Heritage Centre). He served as a member of the Heritage Centre Program Committee and was still active on the Committee for Yiddish. A few years ago Itzi gave an outstanding biographical address on his late father, Dr. Ben Victor, a popular family physician in Winnipeg during the 1930s and 40s. This event, sponsored by the Heritage Centre, was attended by over 200 people. More recently he gave an address on "Radical Jewish Education in Winnipeg" as part of the conference on Jewish Radicalism at the Asper Jewish Community Campus. Itzi was predeceased by his father, his mother Rose Victor, and by his beloved daughter Rebecca Ruth; also by his brother Dr. Maurice Victor of Hanover, NH. In addition to his wife he is survived by his nephew Dr. Ben Victor of Montreal, by his sister-in-law Dr. Betty Victor of Hanover, NH, and by many other nieces and nephews. The funeral took place Friday, February 1 at the Chesed Shel Emes conducted by Rabbi Peretz Weizman, with interment at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Diamond, Ken Roseman, Martin Gervey, Maurice Roseman, Andrew Marquess and Howard Morry. Honorary pallbearers were Oscar Antel, Irv Nisenholt, Manny Wiseman, Harold Diamond, Louis Roseman, Harry Gervey, Morris Glow, Abe Arnold, Sid Gutnick; and Les Marks. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Iola and Itzi Victor Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, 123 Doncaster St.
