KATHERINE ANN STOCKWOOD (nee CHAPPEL) 1959 - 2002 It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Kathy Stockwood on Sunday, February 10, 2002. There is an empty place in the hearts of her loving husband Bob, stepson Stephen (Dianne Andrade), mother Edith Chappel, sisters, Susan Semeniuk (friend Gary Ludwick), Connie Chappel (Len Paquin). Kathy was predeceased by her brother Johnny and her dad John. Also left to cherish her memory are her sister-in-law Judy Robertson (Norm) and niece Jessica, brother-in-law Ron (Jo Powys) and niece Laura, aunts and uncles, cousins and friends and business associates. Kathy was born in Winnipeg on September 29, 1959. She attended River East Collegiate and studied commercial art at Red River College. Her special musical talents were expressed at age 6 when she started playing radio jingles on her toy guitar. She became an accomplished guitar player and during her 30s challenged herself to also learn the piano and drums. She had a way with words writing songs, poems and prose. Simple letters or emails were a delight to receive. Her creative ability was also expressed in her many photographs, drawings, paintings, ceramics and stone sculptures. She was quick to learn and seemed to master new technology and her "state of the art" computer with ease on which she worked as a designer for the company she owned with her husband Bob. Kathy was a fitness buff and enjoyed swimming, jogging, snowshoeing and rock climbing in the Whiteshell. She loved the outdoors, plants and nature, and weekends year-round at Betula Lake. She planted beautiful gardens at the lake and photographed the plants when they produced their best showing of the season. She also enjoyed picking wild mushrooms and often wrote about her nature walks. The following prose was written by Kathy in a letter to her family: "The air is saturated with the scents of earth thawing. Its sweet and with each drop of moisture that falls from the branches, an explosion is heard when it lands on the sticky remains of snow. After the explosion, a burst of pine and cedar smells fill the air." We Love and Miss You, Rest Peacefully, Kathy A memorial service will be held at Klassen Funeral Chapel, 1897 Henderson Hwy., on Friday, February 15 at 10:00 a.m. Flowers gratefully declined. For those wishing to make a donation, contributions may be sent to Ronald McDonald House, 566 Bannatyne Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3A 0G7, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to Klassen Funeral Chapel, 338-0331.

  • Dear David Guindon, Thank you for sharing your memories...Kathy continued to write and play her guitar until her passing. - Posted by: Connie Chappel (sister) on: Jul 09, 2015

  • I knew both Kathy and her brother Johnny who I used to play soccer with at recess when we attended John Pritchard Elementary School. They were both happy, positive souls. The best sort of people. The kind that make you happy to be alive. The first time I saw Kathy play guitar and sing was at River East Collegiate outside the gym with Kim B. I was so impressed with their harmonies and Kathy's fingerstyle guitar work. It really put a big smile on my face. It was a bit of a protest song about teachers abusing authority. :) I'll always remember the last time I saw Kathy. It was about 2 years before I moved away from Winnipeg and I bumped into Kathy at what used to be Kolts Music on Henderson Highway. She was very excited about going to play music somewhere that night but had broken a string on her guitar and needed a new set. Getting caught up in her enthusiasm I offered to buy her a set of strings which she graciously accepted. We were only 18 or 19 at the time, still just kids. My friend Ted W. told me the bad news about Kathy when I moved back to Winnipeg in 2003 and I'm glad I found this website where I can say a few words about the person I knew so long ago and who's memory still manages to put a smile on my face. - Posted by: David Guindon (friend) on: Jun 10, 2012
