GEORGE HERBERT VINCENT (1914 - 2002)
Date of Passing: Feb 16, 2002
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGE HERBERT VINCENT (1914 - 2002) It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of George Herbert Vincent on Saturday, February 16, 2002. He died peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre with his family at his side. The staff on 3E surrounded him with love during his last months and his days were filled with laughter and peace. The family wishes to thank them with their deepest gratitude. George was the beloved husband of Ruth; father of Dave (Pat), daughter Arlene (Larry) Redpath and Grandpa to Kris (Melanie), Lee and Laurie. He also leaves to mourn cousin Kay Davidson; sister-in-law Lena Vincent as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives who love "Uncle George". George was born in Winnipeg, the son of William and Christine Vincent. At a young age, the family moved from the city to a farmstead near Lavenham, north of Treherne. This was where his deep love for "country life" began as he acquired his pony, Gyp, and roamed the countryside with his brothers, Bill and Harry. This idyllic life was cut short when, at the tender age of nine, George lost his mother and infant sister in childbirth. The family had to uproot and move back to Winnipeg where their Dad valiantly raised the three boys. During the Second World War he served with the Canadian Air Force and was selected to be in charge of the "food stores". It was at that time, in 1939, he married his beloved Mabel, whom he was to be married to for 52 years. She predeceased him in 1991. He worked in the food business throughout his long career: first operating his own butcher shop in St. James, then as a representative for the Codville Company, and the last 22 years with Westfair Foods, in the Tomboy Store Division. He loved his work but primarily he loved people. George had a long association with St. Aidens Anglican Church, working every Monday with his good friends, "the counters". On October 6, 1995, he married Ruth McMillan, and together they attended the Elmwood Dutch Reform Church where he grew to love his new church family. Georges family thanks Pastor Tom Schultz and the other church members who were so caring and visited Dad often in his last months. He treasured the visits of his friends. He missed the Westfair Retirees Luncheons that he had organized for so long, as well as his curling and cribbage at the Fort Rouge Curling Club. To all who sent cards, flowers and baking to Dad, we thank you. He felt so touched that you cared enough to do that for him. He will be greatly missed for his loving care to each one of us and for his "enthusiasm". NO ONE LOVED MORE The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Janice Mulder, Brian Robbins and each and every staff member of Ward 3E. Your kindness wont be forgotten. In accordance with Georges wishes cremation has taken place. A family graveside service will take place prior to the funeral service to be held in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway on Friday, February 22 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation in Georges memory to Riverview Health Centre - Palliative Care Unit, 1 Morley Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3L 2P4.
