DOROTHY ELAINE (KNIGHT) McCURDY Peacefully on Wednesday, February 20, 2002 with family by her side, Dorothy passed away at home after a lengthy illness. She was predeceased by her first-born, Beatrice and her parents, Leslie and Edith Knight. Left to celebrate her life are her children, Dr. Wendy E. McCurdy, Ms. Corinna J. McCurdy, Dr. J. Leslie McCurdy of Calgary, AB, and Mrs. Deborah H. LeBlanc (Leo) of Port Coquitlam, BC; granddaughter Genevieve S. McCurdy; and siblings, Lois Bowman, Evelyn Mills, Allan Knight of Calgary, AB, and Dr. Leslie Knight (June) of Souris, MB. Dorothy was born March 19, 1930 and raised in Souris, MB. At graduation from Souris Collegiate Institute she was class valedictorian. She moved into Winnipeg to attend Success Business College and graduated with honours. Before graduation she was hired to teach typing and named head of the department upon graduation. After a very enjoyable few years she left to be married. She brought up her family in Deloraine (1954 to 1960), The Pas, and returned to Winnipeg - Fort Richmond in 1966. The community was very special to her. She was involved in many activities related to her children and was their number one cheerleader. Her volunteer work was extensive including her long-term service to the United Church Women (U.C.W.) beginning at Westminster United Church followed by Deloraine, The Pas and Fort Garry United Church units. She served on the Pastoral Care Committee at the Fort Garry United Church; collected for the Cancer and Heart Associations; tested for the Hostess Badge for the Girl Cuides of Canada for over 20 years; and canvassed in many political campaigns. She worked for Beauty Counsellors of Canada as both a distributor and counsellor for 33 years and cherished the friends she made during this time. In The Pas she taught typing at Keewatin Community College. From 1979 to 1990 she was employed by the University of Manitoba as Executive Secretary to the Director of Agriculture and after retiring worked for the Manitoba Government as Executive Assistant for her MLA. Dorothy was a vibrant, dynamic woman filled with grace and humour. Her positive outlook on life was an inspiration to all around her. She had an unflappable memory, unbeatable work ethic and incredible zest for life. Her family and friends meant the world to her and she will be dearly missed by all. The family gratefully acknowledges Dr. Andrew Maksymiuk, Dr. Jones; staff at CancerCare MB out-patient facilities St. Boniface General Hospital and Health Sciences Centre; staff on D3 Health Sciences Centre and the Palliative Care Ward St. Boniface General Hospital; and all physicians, nurses and homecare personal involved in Moms care from the Palliative Care Program whom enabled her wish - to pass away with dignity and peace at home. A special thank you to Dr. Ross E. Stimpson whom Dorothy thought so much of and who cared for her throughout her illness. "How dull it is to pause, to make an end, to rust unburnished, not to shine in use." A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, February 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd. with Rev. Gordon Taylor officiating. Visitation and viewing for family and friends will be held Monday, February 25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway.
