Douglas (Doug) McKechnie passed away after a short illness in the Rockyview General Hospital, Calgary, AB, on Friday, February 15, 2002 at 92 years of age. He was born on a farm north of Portage la Prairie, MB on May 30, 1909, attended school at Portage Creek and Portage Collegiate. After spending some time on the family farm, he joined the ManPower Commission (later to be Manitoba Hydro) in 1930. He spent time as a district supervisor in Somerset and Morden before moving to the head office in Winnipeg in 1943 as a system supervisor. After 42 and one-half years with Hydro, he retired in 1974. This was followed by 10 wonderful winters in San Diego with his wife Isabel and many golfing friends. He enjoyed his summer golfing at Southwood Golf Course and visiting friends and family. He particularly took great joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Doug was happiest helping others. He tried to do so through many years on the board of Rosedale United Church where he was a lifetime member. He was also proud of his time going through the Masonic and Shrine offices. He was a Past Master of Prince Ruperts Lodge No. 1 and Past District Deputy Grand Master of the eleventh Masonic District. Doug was also a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Winnipeg, and a Shrine member of Khartum Temple. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Percy and Bertha McKechnie of Portage, a brother Jack of Calgary and his sister Jean Young of Portage. He was also predeceased by his daughter-in-law Irene and son-in-law Aubrey. In July of 1988, he lost his beloved wife of 58 years, Margaret Isabel (Galbraith). Shortly after Isabels death, Doug moved to Calgary to live with his son Craig and to be close to his daughter Diane of Lethbridge. Left to mourn are son Craig, and Craigs friend Olive (Ollie) Sinclair; daughter Diane Klause; granddaughters, Pam Froud (Tab, Sophie and Somer) in Bermuda, Dr. Jill Bridges (Dean and Jack) of Calgary; and grandsons, Jayson of Edmonton and Jeff (Jaime, Shaylynn and Sydney) of Lethbridge. Funeral services will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. W., Winnipeg, MB, at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, February 25, with Rev. Russell Wardell of Churchill Park United, officiating. Interment to follow on site. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to The Arthritis Society, 200 - 1301-8th St. S.W., Calgary, AB T2R 1B7, or to the charity of your choice.
