TOM MONTGOMERY After a lengthy illness and a courageous battle with pneumonia, Thomas Weir Montgomery passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 21, 2002 at St. Boniface Hospital. Tom was born in Winnipeg in 1923 and grew up in the Weston area where he attended Cecil Rhodes School and Daniel Macintyre Collegiate. He survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Marion; his sister Elizabeth of Santa Rosa, CA; his daughter Linda of Toronto; and son Robert, daughter-in-law Helen and grandsons, Max and Leo, also of Toronto. Tom had a long and successful career in the insurance industry and retired from Reed Stenhouse in 1983 as a Vice-President. During his career, Tom was a pioneer of Manitobas student accident insurance programs which he subsequently managed for many years, and successfully oversaw a nationwide oil industry insurance program for Shell oil. Tom was an accomplished writer, poet and performer, and was a member of the Winnipeg Repertory Theatre where he met his future wife Marion. During the Second World War, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force primarily in British Columbia and England, and together with Marion was an entertainer in the troop shows. As an active member of the Kinsmen Club, Tom enjoyed his years as President of both the Weston Brooklands and Winnipeg clubs, as District Governor and as a member of the Kinsmen National Executive. He contributed a great deal of energy to community service throughout his life culminating in a City of Winnipeg community service citation. Tom loved curling and was a member of the Winnipeg Curling Club for many years. He took pleasure in his childrens sporting activities, spending his fair share of time on rink side snow banks and serving as a coach and volunteer at Fort Garry Community Club. Tom was a sports fan and was a proud supporter of Winnipeg and Canadian sports. Post-retirement, he and Marion spent many blissful winters in Florida, with summers divided between Winnipeg and the lake near Gimli. They also took great pleasure in the several overseas trips they made. Tom will be remembered as a very special person. He had a warm and outgoing personality and a great sense of humour that was enjoyed by a great many friends and his family. Tom loved storytelling and "Hardships" was his favourite. Most of all, Tom Montgomery was a sensational husband, father and grandpa who will be missed enormously. A memorial service for Tom will be held on Tuesday, February 26 at 1:30 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. A reception will follow the service. Heartfelt thanks to the tremendous people in CVT and SICU and Dr. Warrian at St. Boniface Hospital. Donations may be made to the Education Fund for CVT Nurses at St. Boniface General Hospital, 409 Tache, Winnipeg, MB, R2H 2A6. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
