Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVALERIE ANNE HAYS (nee PETERSON) April 19, 1935 - February 25, 2002 It is with our deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister and friend Valerie on Monday, February 25, 2002, at the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Ward. Valerie was born in Winnipeg and lived here her entire life. She grew up in Fort Rouge and lived her adult life in Windsor Park on Maywood Road - it was here she found great neighbours and lifelong friends: she thanks all of them for including her in the community. Valerie was a devoted mother, grandmother, wife and sister. She enjoyed many summers at Moose Lake and Winnipeg Beach. She was an avid watcher of baseball and curling, and enjoyed throwing curling stones herself. For several years she could be seen sorting Carleton Cards at Superstore and striking up a conversation with anyone who wished to. She was at ease meeting new people and making new friends. Valerie is survived by her three children, Sandra (Yiannis) Papageorgiou of Arahova, Greece, Russell (Carol) and Linda (Don) Mortimore; four grandchildren, Mark Nelson, Irini Papageorgiou, Josh Mortimore, and Reese Valery Hays. She is also survived by her sister Meryle Rich; niece Ronda (Gordo, Megan) Bell; cousins, Marilyn, Monty, Katherine; Dons children Justin and Kyle Mortimore; and her beloved pet Prince. She was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Margaret Peterson; and aunts, Ethel, Marge and Chestine. A special thank you to Dr. Ogarenko; Lynn McGregor, Palliative Care nurse; Mila, homecare worker; and the many other homecare workers who attended to Mom. Thank you to the St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit for their special care these past few months, and Victoria Hospital Oncology for their care over the years. Flowers are respectfully declined and donations can be made to the Childrens Wish Foundation, Lower Level, 350 St. Mary Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3C 3J2, in memory of Valerie. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating Valeries life will be held Thursday, February 28 at 3:00 p.m. in the Edward J. Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald St., with Rev. Ken Turnbull officiating. A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR SISTER LINDA AND HER HUSBAND DON, WHO TOOK MOM INTO THEIR HOME IN MID-NOVEMBER AND CARED FOR HER UNTIL HER FINAL HOURS. MOM APPRECIATED ALL YOU DID FOR HER IN THESE LAST FEW MONTHS AND WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOUR DEVOTION AND CARE SO THAT MOMS LAST MONTHS WERE COMFORTABLE.
