MARGARET GWENDOLYN MAY ABBOTT (nee EVANS) Unexpectedly on Sunday, February 24, 2002 while vacationing in New Zealand, Gwen passed away at the age of 67 years. Beloved wife and best friend of Alison George Abbott. Predeceased by her parents, Richard "Dick" and May Evans; brother Lew and wife Irma; sister-in-law Bernice Abbott; and granddaughter Aydan Roach. Gwen is survived by husband Al, brother Frank and wife Lorraine, brothers-in-law, Harry Abbott and Reg Abbott and wife Lorene; and sister-in-law Anita Abbott. Loving mother of Michael Abbott and wife Diane, Susan Roach and husband Rob, Nancy Patus and husband Bill and James Abbott and wife Leslie. Devoted Nana to grandchildren, Gary, Melanie, Lindsay and Bradley (Michael and Diane), Joshua, Scott, Lucas, Morgan and Rhyan (Susan and Rob), Holly and Johanna (Nancy and Bill), and Olivia and Jack (James and Leslie). Much-loved aunt of numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Born in Winnipeg, April 3, 1934, Gwen attended St. James Collegiate and United Collegiate. As a teenager, Gwen worked and modelled at Eatons in downtown Winnipeg. Gwen was fully trained as a dental assistant and she worked in the Winnipeg area for a number of years. Gwen, Al and the gang at the Winnipeg Canoe Club enjoyed many happy times together. Gwen and Al Abbott were married on August 26, 1958 at Deer Lodge United Church in Winnipeg. They moved to Ontario shortly thereafter and raised four children. Gwen was an active partner to Al in his 27 years as a Canadian Tire Dealer, with stops in Port Hope, Grimsby, Winnipeg and, since 1995, Nanaimo. Through all of their travels, Gwen made and kept up friendships. Her favourite place for summer gatherings every year was the family cottage at Clear Lake, MB. Gwen lived life to the fullest. She always enjoyed a good story, including an off-colour joke. Gwen was also of strong character, never afraid to express her opinion, with a strong belief in right and wrong. She was a homemaker par excellence, whose culinary skills, whether for fancy dinner parties or simple family get-togethers, were renowned. Gwen brightened the lives of many, many friends across the country, with her grace, charm and unfailing good humour - she was always there to give love and support in times of need. Gwen never forgot a birthday, anniversary or special occasion - her birthday singsong phone calls are legendary. Gwen was a devoted wife to Al, her childhood sweetheart and husband of 43 years. She always carried herself with beauty, grace and style. Gwen dedicated her life to her family and friends - and pets. She was always happiest when surrounded by family and friends, old and new. All of us will remember a home filled with love, hospitality and most of all, laughs. A cremation service and prayers were held on Tuesday, February 26 in Whangarei, New Zealand, near where Gwen passed away. A service will be held on Wednesday, March 6 at 2:00 p.m. at Deer Lodge United Church, 2093 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, with Rev. Peter Barrow of Georgetown, ON, presiding. Following the service, there will be a celebration of Gwens life at 3:30 p.m. at the St. Charles Country Club, 100 Country Club Blvd., Winnipeg. For Gwen and Als friends on the West Coast, an informal gathering will be held in Nanaimo at a later date. The family would like to thank the Maxwells, the Johnstons, the Porters and the Jujnovichs from Whangarei, New Zealand for all of their love and support, especially during recent days. For those who wish to do so, donations in Gwens memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of their choice. E-mail condolences to the family may be sent to: gwenal@shaw.ca. ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS
