Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTHELMA IRENE COOKE (nee McLEAN) 1914 - 2002 Quietly on Wednesday, February 27, 2002, following a lengthy illness, Thelma Cooke passed away at the German Canadian Home (Vancouver, BC) at the age of 87. Thelma was born in Winnipeg on July 7, 1914, the daughter of Christine and Stanley McLean. She grew up in the west-end, attending Wellington, General Wolfe, and Daniel McIntyre schools, and was a member of Maryland United Church. She married Alfred Benjamin Cooke on July 19, 1941. While living in Winnipeg she occasionally worked at the T. Eaton Company. In 1967, she moved with her husband and son from River Heights to Vancouver. She was an avid sports fan, cheering for the Blue Bombers long after residing in British Columbia, and loved animals. She also enjoyed gardening, bowling, bingo, and attending church (Faith Baptist Church, Vancouver). Thelma was predeceased by her parents, brother Lorne McLean, sister Roxie Holmes, and brother-in-law Julian Stevenson. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of 60 years Ben, daughter Carole (Glenn) Friesen, son Robert, granddaughter Candi (Daniel) Bezte, great-grandson Benjamin Bezte; sister Amy Stevenson; sisters-in-law, Dora McLean and Patricia Cooke; brothers-in-law, Layton Holmes and Johnny Cooke (Liz) and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 7 at 3:00 p.m. in Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations in Thelmas memory may be made to the Alzheimers Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
