PHILIP EDWIN NEWMAN Peacefully, on February 26, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer, Philip Newman, at the age of 79 years. Philip was surrounded in the last several weeks of his life by those he loved. Philip was born in Winnipeg on October 5, 1922, and was the second son of Myna and George Newman. He was predeceased by his father in 1960, his mother in 1992, his elder brother W.G. Newman, M.D., of Winnipeg, in 2000, and by his younger brother Richard Carson Newman of Dundas, ON, in 1995. He is survived by his two sisters-in-law, Myra Newman of Winnipeg and Elizabeth Newman of Dundas; by his dear and special friend Barbara Hogan; by his nieces and nephews and their spouses, Cynthia (Clancy Smith), Margo (Bob Johnston), Sherrie (Cam Sparling), George (Clare Sabourin), all of Manitoba, Michael (Kendra), Toni, Mark (Patty), and Catherine (David Hillsley), of all Ontario. He is also survived by many grandnieces and grandnephews and by several great-grandnieces. Philip graduated from Daniel MacIntyre Collegiate and in 1942 joined the RCAF as a pilot. He went overseas and joined the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm until the end of the Second World War. From 1946 until 1949 he attended the University of Manitoba and received his Bachelor of Commerce there. From 1949 to 1950 he attended the University of Chicago where he received a Masters of Business Administration in Commerce. In 1950 Philip, known as "Phil" to his colleagues, joined Investors Syndicate of Canada (renamed Investors Group in 1964) in its Securities Investment Department. His initial responsibility was to analyze bonds and preferred stocks to determine their stability as investments. With the companys early success of a newly-created mutual fund product, he soon found himself immersed in the new and exciting world of common stocks. For the next 43 years the analysis and management of both fixed-income and equity-type securities was to be his vocation and passion. In 1970 Phil was appointed President of Investors Securities Management Limited, a subsidiary of Investors Group, responsible for the investment management of all mutual funds sponsored by Investors. He served in this capacity from 1970 until mandatory retirement in 1987. He was then immediately engaged as a consultant to the company and as continuing portfolio manager for the Investors Japanese Growth Fund, a role he performed until 1993. Phils career in the mutual fund industry was marked with great success. He loved his work and the people with whom he associated, both in the company and in the industry. In turn, he was highly respected throughout the financial services industry. Phil was truly a pioneer who made a major contribution to the growth of mutual funds in Canada. After retirement Philip lived a quiet and unassuming life, spending time with family and friends, gardening all summer where he specialized in tomatoes and beans, and travelling to Hawaii every winter. He was a kind and gentle man and will be missed by all who knew him. At Philips request, no formal funeral or memorial service will be held. Cremation and a private family service and interment of ashes has taken place. The service was officiated by Rev. Clark Saunders. The family would like to thank Dr. J. Mulder and the staff at Riverview Health Centre, Palliative Care, 3 East, for the wonderful caring shown to Philip and family for four weeks. If friends so desire donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB, R2L 1X3, to Riverview Health Centre Foundation, One Morley St., Winnipeg, MB, R3L 2P4, or to a charity of ones choice.
