Janis was born in Summerside, PEI on July 19, 1949 and moved to Winnipeg in 1959. In her youth she was a proud member of the Junior Guild of Mount Carmel Clinic where she devoted many hours to helping others. She was also a member of Junior Achievement and won a scholarship from that organization. After being valedictorian at St. James Collegiate in 1967, she went on to the University of Winnipeg where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree followed by a Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba. After a short career in teaching she moved to Portage la Prairie where she lived until Multiple Sclerosis necessitated her return to Winnipeg. Janis will be dearly missed by her mother Sybil Thurmeier (Leach). Also mourning her passing are her husband John Wickberg, of 30 years of marriage, son David (Kirsten), daughter Rena, brother Rick (Sue; Sarah, Katy, and James), father-in-law Howard Wickberg, and sister-in-law Wendy Erlendson (Chris; Jarrod, Jill and Elyssa, Christopher). Janis will also be in the prayers of her aunts, Margaret and Anne; uncles, John and Frank Thurmeier as well as the Sandalack cousins, Ron (Judy), John (Linda), Carol, Alan (Pat) and their families in Saskatchewan. She was predeceased by her father Jake Thurmeier, Auntie "D" (Dorothea) and Uncle John Sandalack. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m. in St. Bedes Anglican Church, 99 Turner Ave. at Mount Royal with Rev. Jamie Howison officiating. The caring, compassion, and engaging optimism of the staff of 3 DE Centre Tache have contributed tremendously to Janis quality of life over the past 13 years. Janis care and comfort during her final weeks have been ensured by the skill, professionalism, and compassion of Dr. Cyr-Hornick and the staff of 6A South at St. Boniface General Hospital. Mere words cannot adequately convey our familys appreciation for the efforts of these incredible people. Janis will always be remembered for her winning smile, enthusiasm, and optimism. We will take comfort in the fact she is in a better place where she will struggle in pain no longer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 400-141 Bannatyne Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 0R3. WOJCIKS ALL BELIEFS & FAITHS FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM 897 - 4665
