J. BRUCE FRAIN, M.D. J. Bruce Frain, M.D. FRCP (C), FACP, died after a lengthy illness on March 4, 2002. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Jane; his daughters, Marnie (Avrum Rosner), Nancy, and Jennifer (Matthew Decter) his son Charles; and his grandchildren, Michael, Jeffrey, Hardial, and Ari. Bruce was born in Minden, ON and raised in the town of Haliburton, the son of Dr. Charles E. Frain, a country doctor (M.D. University of Toronto, 1916). Bruce received his education at UTS in Toronto, and his M.D. at the University of Toronto in 1944. After serving in the Canadian Army, Bruce continued his post-graduate medical training at Toronto General, Wellesley, and Sunnybrook Hospitals in Toronto and the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. While an Arthritis Society Fellow at Sunnybrook, he met and married Jane Jackson, a laboratory researcher. Bruce and Jane moved to Winnipeg in 1952, where he joined the Winnipeg Clinic, remaining there until retiring in 1995. Bruce was an early pioneer in the field of Rheumatism in Canada. He served on the first Board of Examiners for the new specialty at the Royal College. His distinguished professional career included an appointment as Assistant Professor, University of Manitoba Medical School, and member of staff of the Winnipeg General and Rehabilitation Hospitals and the Health Sciences Centre. He was President of the Canadian Rheumatism Association, the President and Board member of the Manitoba Division of the Arthritis Society and representative on the National Board. Bruce was a deeply spiritual man and was very involved with his church. He was a Vestry member in two Anglican churches and Rectors Warden at St. Georges Anglican Church in Crescentwood. Bruce was a man of uncompromising honesty, impressive intellect, and great curiosity about the world around him. He enjoyed his weekly bridge games, travelling the seven continents, and over 40 years, he took great pleasure in the family cottage at Minaki. Bruce was a dedicated physician, a loving husband, parent, and grandparent, and a loyal friend to many. He will always be remembered with love by his family and with affection and respect by all whose lives he touched. Memorial service will be held on Friday, March 8, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Georges Anglican Church, Crescentwood, with the Rev. Canon J.A. Harwood Jones officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Canadian Arthritis Society or to St. Georges Anglican Church Memorial Fund. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
