ERNEST ARTHUR GARNEYS December 19, 1926 - March 4, 2002 After a courageous battle with cancer, Ernie passed away on Monday, March 4, 2002, at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, with his family by his side. Ernie is survived by his loving and devoted wife and soul mate, Georgie; sons, Russell (Susan) of Kenora, ON, and Dr. Glenn (Pearl) of Peterborough, ON; and his four precious grandchildren, Jeffrey and Scott (Kenora), Ellen and Riley (Peterborough). He was an only child of the late Ernest and Janet Garneys. Ernie was raised in the Fort Rouge area. He joined the Merchant Navy during the Second World War and served his country until he became of age to serve with the R.C.N. He joined the Fort Garry Police Department in 1954 and became an officer with the Winnipeg Police Department upon the amalgamation of the various suburban forces. He retired from the force at the rank of Staff Inspector after 30 years of service. Ernie will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humour and spirited storytelling. Ernie and Georgie shared 18 wonderful years of retirement together and enjoyed summers with their family at their little piece of heaven at Trout Lake and many winters in Lake Havasu, AZ. In keeping with Ernies written wishes, there will be no formal service. Special thanks to Dr. Maxwell and his caring staff in oncology at Victoria Hospital; nurse Richard from Home Care for his daily visits which made it possible to keep Ernie at home as long as possible; and also to the nurses and staff at Riverview Health Centre for their care during Ernies last three days; last but not least, thanks sister Ruth and Linda Edwards for everything. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ernies memory to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Ernie and his family would like to ask you to remember him in your own special waygive flowers to someone you love, that they may enjoy them today. Commit a random act of kindness, hold your family dear and tell someone today that you love them. Goodbye my family, my life has passed, I loved you all until the very last.
