ELSIE BEAR 1921 - 2002 It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Elsie Bear of Selkirk. She was 80 years of age, and died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, after a lengthy illness of kidney disease. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Doug (Nettie), Gary, Audrey, Marlowe (Lisa) and daughter-in-law Maria; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; only surviving sister Marg (Wilf) Anderson; as well as many "grandchildren", nephews, nieces and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Sam, son Gerald, and great-grandson "Little G". Elsie was born in Grand Marais, MB, moved to Selkirk with her husband Sam Bear, and together raised five children, four boys and a girl. She worked for the town of Selkirk for 20 years and also volunteered at the Selkirk Friendship Centre and Metis Federation for many, many years. What Elsie was most known for was her annual Christmas Dinner for the needy. First were phone calls, then volunteers, finally a tasty dinner for a couple of hundred people if need be. Elsie was bestowed many honours in her life including Woman of the Year, Wall of Honour at the Winnipeg Friendship Centre, Senator of the Manitoba Metis Federation, and the Order of the Buffalo Hunt. Thank you to the staff at Central Park Lodge, and the doctors and nursing staff at St. Boniface Dialysis Unit. Prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 8 at Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, MB. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, also in the chapel, with interment to follow at St. Peters Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dwayne Hourie, Morgan Bear, Robbie Moore, Chico Hourie, Larry Hourie and Brian Hourie. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Hourie, Stanley Sutherland, Greg Dewar, David Chartrand and Yvonne Dumont. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elsies memory to St. Peters Church Cemetery Fund, Box 19, Group 215, RR2, Selkirk, MB R1A 2A7. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
