IRENE AMY KENCHINGTON LONGLEY LIGHT We lost the Irene we knew on December 18, 1997 when a devastating stroke took away her ability to communicate and function in the independent way she had known to this time in her life. After 4 long years Irene peacefully passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at the age of 92, and to her familys relief is now in the arms of the LORD she always believed in. Irene was the only child of Amy and Walter Kenchington and was born in Bournemouth England in 1909. She soon found herself in Canada with strong family roots being established in Winnipeg where she helped her parents run both a large boarding house and a summer beach hotel for many years. Irene experienced many varied events in her life from being chauffeured in the Daimler in England, to crossing the Atlantic in one of the last unescorted passenger ships at the start of the Second World War, to proudly starting a career at 50 as a Supervisor of Housewares at Eatons Polo Park, to accomplishing 60 accident free years of driving. She lived in England and four Canadian provinces ending up back in Winnipeg for the last 57 years. Over the years Irene was active in the Ladies Guild at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, the Victoria Ladies Curling Club and Manitoba Ladies Curling Association, and helped out at Bingo at Weston Memorial and Orioles Community Clubs and Valour Road Legion. Her home and garden were her pride where she enjoyed sharing the annual bounty of produce and hosting countless family parties which always included a sing song around her at the piano. Just knowing Mum was "there" for any reason was an important part of her familys life. This was a very strong and independent lady. Her ability to speak up and face any adversity head on was an important example for her family to follow. We knew she loved us and was always very proud of anything we accomplished. Irene was predeceased by her parents, her husband Grahame in 1943, and her husband Bill in 1963. She is survived by her sons, Bob (Aileen), Walter (Marnie), Terry (Penny) grandchildren, Bob (Joni), Brenda (Glenn), Grahame (Mary Ann), Eric (Christine), Douglas (Lori), Joelle (Gerry), Kristin and 15 great-grandchildren. Sincere thanks to the caring staff on T4 at Deer Lodge Centre for their kindness and concern to Irene for these last years. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date this spring when all of Irenes family can be present. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Irenes memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation at 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 2H8 would be appreciated.
