SAM RICHARD MILES It is with profound sadness at his passing, but with thanksgiving for his life, that we announce that Richard Miles passed away peacefully in his 90th year on Thursday, March 14, 2002 at the Grace Hospital. Left to forever cherish his memory are his loving wife Frances; his children, Gary (Ricki), David (Stephanie), Heather (Jerry) and Jaye (Pam), as well as his beloved grandchildren, Danny, Jeff, Laura, Greg and Joel. He is also survived by his sisters, Claire Dveris (Dave) and Anne Gutterman (Sid) as well as his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Helen Miles, Claire Miles, Don Golden (Evelyn), Esther Carr, and David Golden (Molly). He was predeceased by his brothers, Nate and George and his sister Celia. Richard was born on May 16, 1912 in Winnipeg to Jacob and Esther Miles. He graduated from the University of Manitoba Law School and went on to do post-graduate work at Columbia University in New York. He returned to Winnipeg to practice law and subsequently went into the family theatre business. His businesses grew to include hotels, bowling alleys, restaurants, real estate development and video arcades. He enjoyed a second career at the age of 80 as a mutual fund broker and life insurance agent and was active in this field until May 2001. In March 1942, Richard married Frances Golden and together they raised their family of four children. His greatest joy in later life was spending time with his five grandchildren and watching them develop into adulthood. He was a doting grandfather who was very proud of all of their accomplishments. One of Richards greatest loves was his music. He started his violin career playing for silent movies. He played in several orchestras and trios and performed at numerous concerts throughout the years. Bringing the spirit of music to many seniors in nursing homes throughout the city was a joy for him over many years. Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 17 at 11:00 a.m. at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. Pallbearers will be his five grandchildren, Danny, Jeff, Laura, Greg and Joel, and his nephew Alex Carr. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richards memory to the charity of your choice. His memory will forever live in our hearts.
