JOHN MARTENS It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of John Martens at the age of 83 years on Sunday, March 17, 2002. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Violet of 59 years; son Ken (Louise) Martens, grandson Kevin (Patti) Martens, great-grandson Coleson John. From Saskatoon, daughter Carol (Arie) Klapwijk, grandsons, Courtney and Landry. He is also survived by sisters, Frieda Falk, Elsie (John) Klassen and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Agatha Martens; and brother-in-law and dear friend Ed Falk. John was born March 26, 1918 in Southern Russia. The family immigrated to Canada in 1924 where they settled in Springstein, MB. In 1945 they moved to Winnipeg. His love for the outdoors, fishing and hunting, led him to open John Martens Wholesale Sporting Goods Ltd. in 1947. His keen business sense enabled the company to expand across Western Canada. Many of those he leaves behind remember the fishing weekends and hunting seasons which John cherished so much. Throughout his years in the sporting goods industry and his worldwide travels John touched many lives. We are thankful that Dad was able to enjoy his retirement in the outdoors where he was happiest. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. B. Rumbolt. Donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301 - 352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 2H8. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 20 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 21 at 1:00 p.m. at First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame, with Rev. Franz Wiebe officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM 885-9715
