JACK HUMBY April 6, 1909 - March 22, 2002 On Friday, March 22, 2002, Jack Humby, at the age of 92 years and 11 months, died peacefully in his home. He was an upstanding citizen and a family man who lived a full and rich life. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife for 73 years, Beatrice, his daughter, Shirley, and his son, Harry. He will also be dearly missed by his son-in-law, Albert, and daughter-in-law, Francie. Also dear to Jack were his grandchildren - Gary, Peggy, Celesta, Alyssa, John - and great grandchildren - David, Meryn, Amanda, and Jared. He will also be missed by his two remaining close friends, Brian Saul and Bob Barry. Jack was the last of his siblings, predeceased by his brothers, Frank, Dick and Burt, and his sisters, Edith and Dorothy. He was born in Winnipeg. Here, he learned to be a master plumber and ran his own business successfully for almost 50 years. He was known amongst his clientele in the St. James area for his fine workmanship and his honesty. However, Jacks real interests and activities were those of a sportsman, a hunter, and an inventor. Jack was very popular with fellow sportsmen and had a huge circle of friends from all walks of life. He was a lover of nature and the outdoors, an incredible marksman, and a firearms expert. He loved to tinker and, among other endeavors, he built the first track-driven snowmobile in the province and several much faster "snowplanes", each driven by an aircraft engine. After retirement, Jack and his wife, Beatrice, moved to Victoria, BC. There he continued to enjoy the outdoors in endless summer weather. He had a fishing boat on the ocean and caught fish until friends and family would take no more. In his basement shop, he tinkered and helped his neighbors, on all sides, with projects. As he had been in Winnipeg, he became the valued local expert on mechanical things. After a 25-year holiday in Victoria, Jack and his wife moved back home to Winnipeg. Jack was 90 and his health was failing, but the years had been good to them. For the past two years, Jack and Bea have lived close to their son, Harry, and his family. They have enjoyed Harrys daily company as well as frequent visits from their daughter, Shirley, and son-in-law, Albert, of Toronto. The family thanks Jacks home care workers for their daily help and kindness. Following Jacks wishes, a private family service was held on March 27, 2002. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of ones choice.
