STEVE NIKOLYCHUK Steve Nikolychuk peacefully passed into the presence of His Lord and Saviour, Saturday, March 2, 2002 at 6:00 p.m., at St. Anthonys Hospital, The Pas, MB, after years of patient suffering from chronic lung disease. Steve was born the seventh child to Lena and Wasyl Nikolychuk Thursday, August 10, 1922 at Parkerview, SK. He grew up with his 11 brothers and one sister on the family farm in that area. Steve moved to The Pas in 1941 where his family relocated after their mothers death. Steve worked with his older brothers at wood cutting, commercial fishing and then farming and trapping. Steve enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army at Winnipeg May 20, 1943, and served in several countries overseas during the Second World War. Steve spent a number of winters in various communities in the north packing fish for Booth and Keystone Fisheries and worked at trapping and farming in the Carrot Valley except when flooded out in 1948 and 1952. Steve was united in marriage to Dorothy Margaret Rose Munson, Monday, May 22, 1961 at Strathclair, MB. Steve operated Fairway Service just north of The Pas for a number of years and with the start of Churchill Forest Industries, began employment there. Steve and Marge bought a small farm near Carrot Valley Hall where they continued to reside. Steve was very proud of his 55 years as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He worked on the executive of The Pas Pro Life for 10 years and was a supporter of the Sam Waller Museum. He leaves to mourn his wife of 40 years, Marge; his daughter Joy (Craig) Matechuk and granddaughters, Michelle Joy and Tara Denise; son Perry (Angie) Nikolychuk and twin grandchildren, Roger James and Stephanie Marie; brothers, Matt (Norma), Alex, Bill (Lucy), Ted, Walter, and Jim (Trudy) sister Mary Solotwinski; brothers-in-law, John Munson, Flin Flon, Sandy (Pat) Munson, Long Sault, ON; sisters-in-law, Olga Nikolychuk, Kay Nikolychuk, and Doris Nikolychuk; goddaughter Janet (Gene) Luce of Lloydminster, SK; and numerous nieces and nephews. Steve was predeceased by his mother Lena; father Wasyl; brothers, John, Nick, George, Sam, Pete; sisters-in-law, Ruth, Rose, Olga; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carl and Monica Munson; brother-in-law Harry Solotwinski. A celebration of Steves life was held Monday, March 11, 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Hemauer Funeral Home, with their close friends, Capt. Chris Dickens (Capt. Cathy Dickens) of the Salvation Army presiding. Organist was Gladys LaJambe. A Solo of "Beyond the Sunset" was sung by Valerie Beil. Scripture was proclaimed by Pastor Betty Olson. The Eulogy was given by Capt. Chris Dickens. Legion Tribute was given by Comrade Ove Larsen and the Presentation of Medals to Perry Nikolychuk was made by Jack Ashley Sr. Immediately following the service everyone was invited to join Steves family for a time of fellowship and refreshments at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall. Royal Canadian Legion Honor Guard were Doug Goldstrand Sr., Claude Joyal, Jack Ashley Sr., Joe Cloutier, Peter Wilson, Rick Johnson, Bill Hoskins, and Don Zaharia. If friends so desire, donations to the Palliative Care Unit of St. Anthonys Hospital, Box 240, The Pas, MB R9A 1K4 or to a charity of choice would be appreciated by Steves family.
