SYDNEY JOHN (JACK) DOWN Peacefully, with family members by his side, Jack passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2002 at Riverview Health Centre. Jack was born in Winnipeg on June 6, 1921. He was predeceased by Nora, his wife of 55 happy years. He is survived by daughters, Marilyn Fitzjohn (David) of Winnipeg, Judith Moodie (Bryant) of Edmonton and Nancy Stewart (Alan) of Winnipeg; and by his grandchildren, Paul, Susan and Grant Davidson; Melissa, Stephanie and Jamie Johnson; and Scott and Patrick Stewart. His brothers, Ron (Pat), Gordon (Valerie), Russ (Jill) of Calgary, and Bruce (Sheila) also survive him. Jack was predeceased by his parents, Sydney and Marjorie Down; and by his sister Kae Gillespie. Nora always came first in Jacks life. He and Nora enjoyed their many years together in a close and loving marriage. He was a caring father and loved to spend time building at the cottage, first at Victoria Beach, and later at West Hawk Lake. He loved to work and play together with his grandchildren at West Hawk. After serving Canada in the Second World War, Jack became a Chartered Accountant. He was very successful in that profession, becoming a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants in 1968. He retired from Thorne Riddell Inc. (now KPMG) at age 61. Jack was also an excellent athlete. He especially enjoyed jogging, golfing, sailing, curling and skating. Jack had boundless energy. He was for many years an active member of "The Assiniboine" No. 114 Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, the Khartum Temple and the Rotary Club of Winnipeg. He was an active member of the Winnipeg Winter Club and the St. Charles Golf and Country Club. Over the years Jack also enjoyed participating in church life, first at St. Andrews River Heights United Church, and later at Knox United Church and All Peoples Church at Falcon Lake. Jacks family expresses their thanks to the patient and caring staff at Lions Manor and the Riverview Health Centre (3D), where Jack resided for the past four years. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, April 8 at St. Andrews River Heights United Church, 255 Oak St. In lieu of flowers, Jacks family appreciates any donations that may be made in his memory to the Salvation Army, PO Box 1932, Winnipeg, MB R3C 3R2, or the Riverview Health Centre, 1 Morley Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4.
