JAMES HENRY PHILLIPS MLS With deep sadness, the family announces the death of Jim on Saturday, March 30, 2002 at the Grace Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Yvonne; daughters, Diane (Neil) McMillan, Sharon (Neil) Denton, and in England, stepdaughter Carrol (Henry) ONeill; stepson Ian (Katie) Jarvis. Jim leaves seven grandchildren in Canada, Andrew, Heather and Stuart McMillan, Michael, Christie, Karly and Craig Denton; and six in England, Kirstie (Mark) Cropton, Ginny (fiance Jon), and Jacqui ONeill, Ellie, Edward, and Miles Jarvis. He also leaves two great-grandchildren, Dean and Jake Cropton. Jim was predeceased by his first wife May; mother and father, Sarah and Edwin; brothers, Lex and Alf; sister Rose Brown and brother-in-law Henry. Jim was born in Winnipeg on December 8, 1921 and spent most of his early childhood on the family farm at Monominto, where he received his elementary schooling. He later moved to Winnipeg to pursue higher education. Following this he taught school in the Interlake District. Jim enlisted in the Army with the Second Canadian Survey Regiment in 1941 and served until 1946 in the European Campaign. He was awarded the Military Medal and was twice mentioned in dispatches. He returned to Winnipeg in 1946. Later that year he married May Spiers whom he met in England, a marriage which lasted 38 years until her death in 1984. Following his release from the Army, Jim continued his education and four years later received his commission as a Manitoba Land Surveyor. He served his apprenticeship while working with the City of Winnipeg and later became the youngest City Surveyor in 1955. Jim served two terms as President of the Manitoba Land Surveyors Association. Upon the amalgamation of the City of Winnipeg and the adjoining municipalities in 1971 he was appointed Director of Land Surveys and Real Estate, a position he held until his early retirement in 1982. After retirement, as time permitted, Jim served on the Board of Revision. He enjoyed life, despite ill health in his later years. He loved his family here and in England both dearly and was never happier than when he was busy with his tools, doing home projects and helping his family. He built a cottage, associated buildings and two boats. His wide range of experience was put to the test many times in helping friends and neighbours at home and the cottage. Jim made the world a better place serving his country, the city and through care and concern for his family and friends. The family would like to thank Dr. J. D. McDowell for over 20 years of care; Dr. R. Kippen; the staff of Grace Hospital ICU and Ward 3 West for the care recently received. Cremation and a private family interment has taken place. Flowers are gratefully declined; in lieu, donations may be made towards the Palliative Care Unit of the Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 10 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB. The Rev. Ian Mills of St. Andrews Anglican Church will conduct the service. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM 885-9715
