Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOUGLAS CLIFFORD GILLIS The death of Douglas Clifford Gillis of Brandon occurred on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at the Assiniboine Centre. Douglas was born in Whitewood, SK on August 16, 1926. Attending school there in his younger years, he was an active ball player and played goalie on his hockey team. He spent many memorable summers at his parents cottage at Round Lake as well as working summers for his dad at the pharmacy. After completing school, Douglas began his career of 39 years with C.P.R. Beginning as an assistant agent, then agent and eventually dispatcher. During the time of his career, he worked in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Douglas was a hockey enthusiast. He started the Minor Hockey in Fleming, SK and was a coach, player and president of the Minor Hockey Association and served on the rink board, ensuring ice was available. As an avid sports fan and player, he was active in both Masters Curling and Masters Golf. He enjoyed spending time watching his grandchildren play sports and any other school related activities including band concerts. Douglas was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Saskatchewan and Manitoba for 50 years and presently a member of Fenwick Lodge #158, A.F. & A.M. Douglas was also a member of the C.P. Pensioners. Among his many interests, Douglas liked to travel. One of his favourite trips was attending the Kentucky Derby and Cruising the Mississippi. Douglas will be most recently remembered for his coffee trips to the Mall and giving the ladies from Ottawa Place a hard time. Douglas is survived by his wife, Fran, of 53 years; son Larry (Betty) of Brandon and daughter Cathy Wilson (Roger) of Westbank, B.C.; grandchildren, Devon and Tory Gillis and Michelle, Scott and Taylor Wilson. He also leaves one brother Jack (Judy) and family of Moosomin, SK. Douglas was predeceased by his parents, Hamilton and Louise Gillis. The ceremony to celebrate Dougs life was held at Memories Chapel on Tuesday, April 2 at 2:00 p.m. Interment followed at Brandon Cemetery. Pallbearers were Keith Allen, Bob Paxton, Wes Ardron, Bill Hales, Barry Cowan and Harvey Smith. Friends so wishing, may make a donation in Douglass memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, B 727 - 10th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4G7. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel and Pre-Planning Centre, 1-204-727-0330.
