ISABEL HAZEL (nee BIRNIE) TATE August 2, 1908 - March 28, 2002 Hazel Tate was born August 2, 1908 at Ashville, MB, to Robert and Frances Birnie, the youngest of six children, Gertrude, Vera, William, Les and Mildred. Hazel was the last surviving member of the original Birnie family who pioneered in the Vista District. Hazel received her formal education in the Vista School District, followed by a three year nursing course at the Kenora General Hospital in Ontario. Following completion of her nurses training, she worked in Ontario, Michigan and Manitoba. In 1938 she married Sidney Clarence Tate. Together Hazel and Sid worked in the retail business (The Farmers Store) successfully in Gilbert Plains until his death in 1964. Hazels involvement in the Gilbert Plains community was extensive, devoting some 50 years to church work, to the hospital auxiliary and to the Rebekah Lodge. Hazel continued to enrich her life with world travel and keeping abreast of world issues. Having no family, Hazel devoted much of her love and generosity to her god-daughter Debbie Fairbank (Mark). She established a strong bond with Richard and Debbies three children, Timothy, Cristalle and David. Hazels frequent visits to Sherwood Park, AB, diminished due to her failing health. Hazel spoke proudly of Inkys accomplishments in the political arena. She was confident that he would make a positive impact for Manitobans. Hazel had many friends and family who visited her at the personal care home in the scenic town of Grandview. Numerous nieces and nephews nearby added sunshine to her days at the Care home. Debbie and Richards family loved their Auntie Hazel very much and kept in touch by phone, letters and visits. Hazel passed away peacefully March 28, 2002 at Grandview Personal Care Home, Grandview, MB. An interment service to celebrate Hazels life will take place at Chatsworth Cemetery, Gilbert Plains, MB, on Saturday, May 18 at one oclock. In lieu of flowers, donations of remembrance may be made to the Grandview Personal Care Home, Grandview, MB, ROL OYO, where Hazel received exemplary care. - Debbie Fairbank, March 28, 2002. Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home, Roblin, MB, entrusted with arrangements. (204)937-2111.
