FRED OTTO Peacefully, on April 6, 2002, at the Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern, MB, with family and friends at his side, Fred Otto at the age of 89 years went Home to be with his brothers and sisters. Fred was the last survivor of a family of 11 children. Fred was born on September 29, 1912, on the family homestead west of Ashern, MB (near Dog Lake). Together with his brothers, they farmed for many years until retiring to town in 1993 where they resided at 16 Spruce Ave. Their home, both on the farm and in town, was always open to family and friends. It seemed that Freds abilities had no bounds. He could sheer sheep, brand cattle, build haystacks and do anything else that he just put his mind to. Fred worked hard on the farm although there was always time to tell a joke or play a trick as he so dearly loved to hear the laughter and see the smiles of those around him. He was certainly the entertainer of the family. A new face would pose the opportunity to play a trick or show one of the many gadgets he had collected over the years. This new face, without doubt, would go home a friend. Fred was also known to be a great berry picker. When his pail was full, others would merely have half the amount. He enjoyed trapping, hunting and was a "good shot". People would come from miles around to hunt with him. Fred loved to listen to music, especially when his neighbors would visit with guitar in hand to play and sing for hours. Fred was one of the best public relations and historian a family could have. Never a harsh word was spoken from this true gentleman who will be sadly missed by his family and many good friends. He is survived by his sister-in-law Ida Otto, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, special friend Esther Boates, and many good friends. Fred was predeceased by his parents, Fredrick and Marie; sisters, Minnie, Emma, Edna, Emeline (Lena) and brothers, Henry (in infancy), Harry, Ralph, Bill, August and Eddie. Friends and relatives may pay their respects between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9 at the Arnason Funeral Home in Ashern. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Ashern, MB, with Pastor Terry Throndson officiating. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment to follow in Ashern Municipal Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Frank Plohman, Randy Otto, Hal Otto, Mark Otto, Brad Otto and John Pow. All those in attendance may consider themselves Honorary Pallbearers. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Lakeshore General Hospital and Homecare staff for the wonderful care they gave Fred. To our family and friends who visited with Fred both at home and in the hospital. A special thank you to Tim and Jean Cameron, Gary and Gordon Brown, Esther Boates and their families. Your visits and friendship will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Camper Pioneer Church Group, c/o Ruth Otto, Box 116, Ashern, MB, R0C 0E0.
