NORMAN THOMAS APSHKRUM It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing of Norman Thomas Apshkrum, aged 74, April 11, 2002 at the Johnson Memorial Hospital, Gimli, MB. Norman leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 56 years, Nell; his daughter Lorraine (Ron) Bennett; his grandchildren, Dwayne (Michelle) Bennett, and Deanne (David) Kulchyski. The joy of Poppas life was his great-grandchildren, Kyla and Joel Kulchyski and Lauren Bennett. Dads love and devotion to his family will always be treasured and remembered. He also leaves to mourn numerous nieces and nephews and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Norman was born in Rembrandt, MB and moved to Winnipeg where he started work with Burns & Company at the age of 15. It was here that he met his wife Nell and married in Poplar Park, MB in 1945. Their home was in Winnipeg for many years while Norman continued with Burns and later transferred to Brandon for 11 years. Their return to Winnipeg saw him, at the age of 60, retire from Burns after 45 years of employment with the company. In 1997 Norman and Nell retired to Gimli where they enjoyed meeting old friends and making new ones. Norman golfed and curled for many years. He was a longtime member of the Fort Garry Curling Club and many golf courses challenged him throughout the years. He continued with these sports until 2001 when his deteriorating health no longer allowed him to participate. Cribbage was a favourite card game and he will be missed by his many friends. Norman enjoyed deer hunting every fall and told many stories of his hunting excursions. His family and friends thoroughly enjoyed the deer sausage that be became very adept at making. Norman was predeceased by his parents, Oscar and Isabelle; his brothers and sisters, Nellie, Elsie, Ernie, Arthur, Samuel, Robert, the twins Margaret and Alfred, and Doris. Funeral services for Norman will be held Monday, April 15 at the Gimli Lutheran Church, 50 - 3rd Avenue. Viewing will be at 10:00 a.m. with service at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor George Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at the Pioneer Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his nephews Gregory Apshkrum, Robert Thordarson, Douglas Thordarson, Arthur MacIntyre, Matthew Bezdek and his brother-in-law Daniel Trochim. The family wishes to thank Dr. Chapnick and the nursing staff at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Gimli for their excellent care and kindness to the family, Bob and Carol Thordarson and the residents of Rotary Towers for their care and support throughout Normans illness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cancer Society. Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Gimli, in care of arrangements.
