ELMA BEALL GERWIN Elma Beall Gerwin, 62, beloved wife of Martin Edgar Gerwin, died very peacefully at her home on Monday, April 15, 2002, surrounded by her family. Elma was born in Ottawa, ON, the daughter of the late Herbert Wilson Beall and the late Mary Forke Beall. She was educated at Bishops University in Lennoxville, QC, and the University of Toronto. She had been a resident of Winnipeg since 1965. From 1990 until her retirement last year, she was a co-ordinator with LiteracyWorks, and was well known for her innovative work in the field of adult literacy. Her many students, and the tutors at LiteracyWorks, will remember her with affection and gratitude. In 2001 she was the winner of a Canada Post Educator Award for literacy workers. Besides her husband Martin, she is survived by son John, daughter-in-law Carol Hoey and grandsons Andrew, Christopher and Spencer; daughter Elisabeth and son-in-law George Fowler; son James and his fiancee Britta Herrmann; brother James Beall, sister-in-law Joanne, nephew Michael and niece Jacqueline. The family wishes to thank Dr. P. Harris and the staff of Grace Cancer Care, as well as Dr. S. Ahmed and the staff of the MacCharles unit of CancerCare Manitoba, for their competence and compassion. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 20, at 11:00 a.m., in the chapel of St Johns College, University of Manitoba. Parking in Lot K on the north side of Dysart Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LiteracyWorks, or to a charity of your choice.
