GERTRUDE LEITOLD (nee KOCH) April 5, 1908 - April 15, 2202 On Monday, April 15, 2002, surrounded by loved ones, Gertrude, aged 94 years, peacefully passed away at the Grace General Hospital. Gertrude was born in Nord Ganna, Hungary, and resided there until 1926 when she immigrated to Canada with her parents and siblings. She was married in 1929 to Andrew Leitold and was blessed with 12 children. She and Dad moved quite frequently due to the nature of Dads employment. They resided in Ashern, MB, Glenroy, ON, Montreal, QC, finally setting up roots in Winnipeg, MB. Gertrude was gifted with a capacity to love each and every one of her family and extended family. This was her vocation in life and she applied this with her undying devotion. Gertrude was a staunch member of her faith and church. She could debate with the best of them on the theological issues according to the gospel. Her faith in God provided her with the strength to overcome many trials and tribulations during her lifetime. Her belief was "That God Always Provides According To Your Needs Not Your Wants" "Praise Ye The Lord, For It Is Good To Sing Praises Unto Our God. So Teach Us To Number Our Days That We May Get A Heart Of Wisdom". - Psalm 90 vs 1-12. Gertrude was predeceased by her parents, Anna and Joseph Koch; two sisters, Elizabeth and Anna; and two brothers, Joseph and Frank; her husband Andrew; her daughter Mary Jackson; and sons-in-law, Mel Jackson and Earl Cooper. Gertrude is survived by four daughters, Theresa Cooper of Halifax, NS, Evelyn (Jerry) Hipfner of Orangeville, ON, Christine (John) Gavin of Edmonton, AB, and Jeanne (Mike) Hamm of Richmond, BC. Gertrude is also survived by seven sons, Ernest (Gisele) Leitold of Montreal, QC, George (Bernice) Leitold of Winnipeg, MB, Michael (Villa) Leitold of Ashern, MB, Phillip (Rose) Leitold of Woodlands, MB, Ronald Leitold of Halifax, NS, David (Teresa) Leitold of Winnipeg, and Gary (Rita) Leitold of Winnipeg. Surviving Gertrude is her beloved sister Vera Fuchs of Ashern, and her brother Mathew Koch of Copley, PA. Gertrude is survived by 22 adorable grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and still counting. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Sincere thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at the Grace General Hospital for their show of compassion and tenderness towards our mother in her last days on earth. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 at the Neil Bardal Services Inc., 984 Portage Ave., Winnipeg (entrance on Aubrey Street), with Rev. Don McIntyre officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in the Brookside Cemetery. Should you wish to make a contribution in Gertrudes memory, a charity of your choice would be appreciated. ARNASON FUNERAL HOMES LTD. ASHERN - LUNDAR (204) 768-2072

  • My grandmother was one of the most beautiful people I've ever met. Although my parents are great, I am clear to credit my best attributes to her. Gertrude helped my parents raise me, spending countless hours by my side, teaching me so much. But because Grandma Leitold was (as I knew her, anyhow) never one to preach, it was through her example that I learned the most: compassion, empathy, patience, and perhaps most importantly, the courage and the confidence to speak out against injustices. April 5 is usually a very quiet day for me. Happy birthday, Grandma. I love you so so much, I thank you for making me the best parts of who I am. - Posted by: Daina Leitold (granddaughter) on: Apr 04, 2012
