DOUGLAS GRANT LOWRY On Monday, April 15, 2002, Douglas Grant Lowry, beloved husband to Shirley, father to Jan (Murray) Sprange, Marilyn (Ed) Rutherford and Grant (Josie) grand-dad to Graeme, Cameron, Bryan and Kevin. Doug is also survived by his sister Jean Garrett of Oakville, ON, and other extended family members and a lifetime of friends. Doug was born to Walton and Isabel Lowry on June 28, 1926, in Saskatoon, later moving to Winnipeg. His childhood years were spent in the River Heights area attending Robert H. Smith, Queenston and Kelvin Schools. Dougs family attended St. Andrews River Heights United Church where Doug, as a young adult, was an active member of the Order of the Black Square. Doug and Shirley enjoyed a strong, happy marriage of 49 years. His family meant the world to him. Many hours were spent with games, puzzles and building special projects in his woodwork shop for his children and grandchildren. He was an avid bridge player and golfer as well as a poet and pun writer. Doug and Shirleys shared love of golf took them to winter in Palm Springs for some ten years, a welcome retirement after a fulfilling business career. Doug will be remembered for his work ethic and commitment to the Winnipeg Real Estate Board, and since his retirement, was an active member of the City of Winnipeg Board of Revision. Doug was an organizer par excellence, a perfectionist, leader and visionary. His welcoming nature was genuine in smile and handshake. Doug was a long-standing member of Southwood Golf and Country Club. He wore the green jacket as President of the Club in 1988. Doug and Shirley enjoyed many happy times at Southwood, family celebrations, T&E antics and of course, the golf that kept them going back. A memorial service and reception will be held Friday, April 19 at 1:30 p.m. in the Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, with Mrs. Cathy Kinsman officiating. A private family interment has taken place. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice. Many thanks are extended to nurses, Cindi, Jeannie and Lindsay of GH6 at Health Sciences Centre, for their professionalism and compassion. Also, special thanks to family physician Dr. Brian Rumbolt and specialists, Dr. Helmut Unruh, Dr. Andrew Maksymiuk, Dr. Larry Tan and Dr. A. Leylek for their optimistic care and support.
