DOROTHY HAZEL SMITH (nee BETSWORTH) On Thursday, April 18, 2002, Dorothy Hazel Smith passed away at Calvary Place at the age of 88 years. She is predeceased by her husband John Williamson Smith, parents, Samuel and Anna Betsworth; and sister Lillian Drummond. Dorothy was a loving mother to her three children, Lois (Tom) Heinbaugh, Bette Toole, and Jim Smith; and a loving grandmother to Phillip Heinbaugh, Holly Fellows, Jennifer Wu, Simon Toole and John Smith; and great grandmother to Alyssa and Kevin Fellows, and Cole and Hunter Heinbaugh. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends. Dorothy was born in Charleswood on July 12, 1913. She started her teaching career in Headingley and after taking several years off to raise her three children. Dorothy returned to her teaching career full time in 1959 after husband Jacks untimely death. Dorothy taught at several schools in Winnipeg until her retirement. Dorothys father Samuel was one of the pioneer residents of Charleswood and Betsworth Street was named in his honour. Dorothy remained active for many years in the Charleswood Historical Society, her high school friends bridge club, the English speaking union and the Retired Teachers Association. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, April 20 at 10:00 a.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1858 Portage Ave. Interment will follow in Brookside Cemetery at a later date. Deepest thanks and appreciation is extended to the staff of Calvary Place Personal Care Home for providing Dorothy with superior medical care and loving attention.
