MARY HELEN LUCKO (nee OSIOWY) It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother Mary, aged 98, on Monday, April 22, 2002 with her daughter Joyce at her side. She was predeceased by her husband Steve in 1974; and her oldest son Danny in 1972; also by two brothers and four sisters. She leaves to cherish her memory her son Mike (Anne) of Beausejour; daughters, Fran (Leith) Cowan of Detroit MI, and Joyce (Bohdy) Jaworski of Winnipeg; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Rose Drimmel and Nellie Lepere of Detroit MI; brother Harry Osiowy of Hazelridge. Mom was born in Hazelridge on November 24, 1903 and married Steve Lucko on June 20, 1926. Together they established and operated a grocery store, trucking business and a Post Office in Hazelglen. These were difficult years where Mom worked very hard, in the store, raising her children and surviving the Depression. She never complained, and always looked forward to a brighter future for herself and her children. In 1944 they purchased a larger store in Oakbank. These were very happy years where lasting friendships were made. In 1959 they relocated to Beausejour and Mom quickly became involved with the Sisterhood of the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church in fundraising to build a new church. She also was a member of the Beausejour Hospital auxiliary and volunteered on a regular basis. Mom was very gifted in sewing, crocheting, embroidery, and quilting. She took great pleasure in sewing clothes for herself and all of us. We will all cherish her memory by having an article of her handiwork. During the summer Mom would be outside tending her huge vegetable and flower gardens. Extended family was very important to her and she hosted many family dinners for the Lucko and Osiowy families. Mom lived in her own home until her recent hospitalization. This was made possible by Lucille and Leona of the Home Care Department who provided homemakers that enabled her to fulfill her wish to remain in her own home. Her homemakers were the best anyone could ask for. Not only did they provide care but played cards with her daily. Many thanks to Barb, Susan, Marion, Paula, Shay, and Lillian. Mom loved each of you dearly. Thank you to Dr. Garth Campbell for your long time care. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Connie Magura, Brenda Topley, Wayne Lucko, Sharon Jones, Charlene Haines, Gary Jaworski, and Theresa Jaworski. We will all miss you, Mom, but we know you are rejoicing in a reunion with Dad and Danny. A prayer service will be held on Thursday, April 25 at 8:30 p.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be held on Friday, April 26 at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church in Beausejour at 1:00 p.m. with Father Ivan Demkiv officiating. Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery. If friends so desire donations in Moms memory may be made to the Beausejour Hospital, Box 1690, Beausejour, MB, ROE OCO. VICHNAYA PAMYAT SOBERING FUNERAL CHAPEL Beausejour, Phone 268-3510 or Man.
