JOHN SCHMITKE On Wednesday, May 1, 2002 at St. Boniface General Hospital, John Schmitke of Winnipeg died at the age of 91 years. John was born March, 1911 in North Dakota from where he moved with his parents, John and Maria Schmitke to Maple Creek, SK in 1912 and then to Maidstone, SK area in 1920. There they purchased land east of Maidstone in the 1930s. He married Martha Vossler in 1939 and had five children: William (Bill) and Madelin of Winnipeg, Martin and Ethel of Innisfail, AB, Alice and Vern Smith of Maidstone, Grace of Jasper, AB, Lesley and Roxann of Calgary, AB; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, five sisters and their families. John was predeceased by his wife Martha in 1969 and wife Catherine in 1986; his parents; and two brothers. In 1973 he moved to Oakbank, MB and then to Meadowood Manor in 1997. Funeral service will be Monday, May 6 at 1:00 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Chapel, 1897 Henderson Hwy. Funeral service also Wednesday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Maidstone Baptist Church, Maidstone, SK with interment in Maidstone Cemetery. Donations may be made to Samaritans Purse- Canada, Box 20100 Calgary Place, Calgary, AB, T2P 4J2 or to Meadowood Manor Personal Care home, 577 St. Annes Rd., Winnipeg, MB, R2M 5B2.
